Thanks Carl! I'll be sure to subscribe (EDIT: It looks like I already subscribed. Nevermind. lol). I'm known as Nellie Ren on YouTube btw. I second that devonjohnsgard. That is a good idea. Renee

Great job Ameenah! Thanks for sharing. A shelving would have been really handy back when I bred bettas. As it stands, if I ever need to make one, I'll know how thanks to your post. Renee

You're welcome. Hmm, maybe it's time to rename him "Orangy" until he changes color again and needs a new name. lol Fish certainly do change color a lot. A had a goldfish named Puon (poor Puon, its owner loves weird names) that had the juvenile dark grey coloring for the first year or two I had it, then a light grey for three of four years and finally, the last couple years I had it, Puon was finally golden in coloration. (Note: That isn't why I have golden in front of the word puon in my username lol). In my opinion, keeping fish is a hobby a person has to go through a little of a trial-and-error period to find out what works and what doesn't. I doubt that many people have no mishaps when keeping fish when they first start. So please don't me hard on yourself regarding your betta's passing. You did the best you could and tried with all you could to save him. Even if you had done less, he may very well have not survived or quite possibly died sooner. Exactly! Keep trying and keep learning. A thing about keeping fish is you never stop learning new things. You're welcome and best of luck with your bettas and other fish! Renee

The fish and shrimp all look very happy and healthy! Their colors are beautiful as well! They have such a beautiful home. You are really talented at aquarium design! Kudos as usual!

I definitely agree that Duckduckgo is better than Google in regard to quality of information (especially regarding fish and Carl's articles). I also personally find it returns more relevant information than Google when I am doing web searches at times. Regarding SEO, I have not used it much despite being an IT major, but I heard that Google uses a very complex algorithm that involves linear algebra. So I don't think it's that easy to predict what will show up for a certain search unless you visit a certain website a lot. Web sites that Google's algorithm determines might interest you appear first in search result although there's an option to turn that off I believe. That's another aspect of Google that is troubling, they collect all kinds of information about users to use in advertising and showing ads from search queries to personal data. As Carl noted, advertising is driving Google more than it should. Likes and shares on Facebook and other social networks can make a website show first in results in search engines and in suggested interests on social networking websites like Facebook. That makes money for a business with an online presence through both clicks on ads on the site and more business because more people are likely to see the website. I hope this explains a bit more about the topic. And also, please like or share American Aquarium Products and Fish as Pets articles. As explained above regarding the SEO, that not only helps support Carl's business and this forum, but helps spread the accurate information in all the articles Carl has written as well. That said, apologies that my post probably got this thread steered even more off topic from its original topic of cycling and the adding of fish food. Renee

Unfortunately, some fish sold at pet stores are injected with hormones to enhance color. A quick search on Duckduckgo search engine seems to confirm that some german blue rams are injected to enhance color. I have not heard of hormone injection to increase growth though. Though I don't think the injections to make the rams bigger, I think it could still be possible. That said, I agree with what others have said that selective breeding is probably the reason. Best of luck and you're right, those are some expensive fish! Renee

First, I hope I picked an appropriate location for this. I was thinking of putting this thread under General Discussion or The Lounge, but I thought an actual area for videos might be a better place to post this. To the subject of this thread, is there an American Aquarium Products YouTube channel? I couldn't find one via a YouTube search unfortunately. I recently joined YouTube to help support American Aquarium Products plus the videos Carl makes are great and highly informative. Carl, I saw that you have channel with demo videos on YouTube. If you don't have a channel and feel it would be a good idea to create one, I think it could be a good idea from a business standpoint. Maybe taking the videos from your account and reposting them under an American Aquarium Products one. That said, this is just an idea and feel free to take it or leave it. Renee

First, gorgeous bettas! I especially love the orange one, he is adorable! Though I am late to this thread, I have to agree with devonjohnsgard that in trying to get him comfortable, you did more for him than he could handle. When I first starting keeping fish (rescued feeder fish which were almost never healthy when I got them), I did a ton of medicating and water changes plus I knew next to nothing about fish at the time. As it turns out, sometimes less is more. I stopped doing too much for them and years later, all of my rescued feeder goldfish seem to live about 8 years before they die or have to be euthanized if they are dying slowly and suffering a lot. However, it is also important to note that fish that are weak whether from poor care or genetics may get die despite the best of care. Also, good question on the salt. I have never considered this when I've added wondershells or Replenish. I should start doing this. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Best of luck with your remaining bettas! Renee

Great video! I had no idea sharks could be trained so easily. I wholeheartedly agree with shark conservation and hope the message of the video reaches many people. Thanks for sharing! Renee

Welcome to Everything-Aquatic kevin! Unfortunately, many aquatic forums and LFS often give misinformation. I have to say this is definitely the most honest and trustworthy aquatic forum and website I have found. That said, I hope you enjoy the forum and find the answers and resources here useful! Renee

Cool. From what I have picked up from this thread and other people's experiences with the TMC GloBeam 600, it is one of the best aquariums lights on the market. Unfortunately, I have never kept plants or really used lights much for my fish, so I know very little in this area. :/ They said they would only agree if they get fed every hour of the day. LOL Renee

That's awesome to hear that she/he is doing well. Begging is one of the best things about fish I think. lol It's nice that the kids got to name them, even though they went with multiple names. Renee

When I said bubbler, I meant a small air pump with airline tubing attached to it. Since it was to put down the fish and the aerator was the smallest I had, I didn't actually bother to put an airstone on the end of the tubing. My mom always calls air pumps bubblers. I picked that up from her. lol

That is great news! I'm glad she/he recovered. Does it have a name? The angelfish seems very healthy and active. So do the other fish. They looked like they were mildly begging for food. Renee

I wish I could help more. Unfortunately, I have never ordered fish via mail and don't have experience with AAZ. However, I have received plants via mail once though. A good site I have heard of for fish is aquabid. They have people selling plants too. url=http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?liveplants]Aquabid Live Plants[/url]. You also may be able to get plants from friends or even people on Everything-Aquatic if they have too much in their aquarium. What type(s) of plants or fish are you looking for? For acclimiating the fish, perhaps it would be better to do it at dusk or dawn when there is little light. Putting a couple dark towels over them can also help I'm sure but I don't know if it's possible (or necessary) to put them in complete darkness for the acclimation. Renee

I wish I had heard of egg crates years ago. Many times I have had tanks with fish I needed to separate and no tank divider that was the right size. I'd love to see pictures as well if you are able ameenah. Renee

Wow. I never knew plecos could have such hug personalities! It sounds like you loved her dearly. Who needs a cat or dog when your fish lets you pet it and wakes you up at night by attacking a heater instead of meowing or barking? lol Cashay, it sounds like your oscars have tons of personality too. I had thought my goldfish had tons of personality, reading this, I think they need some lessons from plecos and oscars. lol LOL I tried, they move them! hahahaha Then use bricks Carl Hmm. Bricks might not be such a bad idea! lol Renee
