Hey guys, So Went isn't going to make it, there is no way I don't understand how he is even still kicking right now He's in alot of pain and he's just down right miserable and hardly living at all now despite my best efforts. Now I refuse to euthanize, but my older sister said she'd do it if I told her how because even she can see he's really not well at all and she knows nothing about fish. So anyways if you guys could give me the dosage for the alka seltzer treatment, then she'll do it for me tonight

I just culled a fish today too. It was growing way too slow and it somehow got its tailfin eroded. It was the betta fry that vi was doing 100% water changes for daily. What gets me is it was eating and acting pretty healthy. Its death marks the end of my breeding bettas... I named it symbol for what it was a symbol of and hwo much I will miss it...

I use 1 to 1 1/2 tablets of alka selzer per quart of water meaning put your fish in a quart of water and drop the alka selzer straight in. The fish will be liekly to jump at first so keep a lid on. Then it should calm down though it may try to swima round or jump every so often becuase it will not know what's going on. Alka selzer works by carbon dioxide poisoning but the benefit of this is after the first few seconds, the fish feels nothing. It can take a hour or more for the fish to die depending on its health and size. I know this is hard and the best thing to do may be to leave the fish in a quart conatiner with alka selzer and a lid on and then leave it in a quiet area for 1 1/2 hours. Then check on it again and it should be dead. But keep in mind, even after the fish stops breathing, it is still alive so if you taking it out too soon is not a good idea. Hope that helps and sorry that you have to go trhough this.
Renee
EDIT: I DO NOT recommend alk selzer anymore. It seems to not work on larger fish. I recommend clove oil over it because the fish fall asleep opposed to panicking and suffucating in the alka selzer when it doesn't work.

If I've ever had to put a fish out of its misery, assuming it's small enough, I've always put it in a plastic bag or jar with some tank water and put it in the freezer. I hope this is okay and that I haven't been making them suffer more.

I feel obligated to share that years after that post about alka selzer, I discovered it didn't work 100% of the time for fish larger than fry, small fish or ones that were already nearly dead. First it didn't with a dyting tetra. Then I had to put down one of my goldfish and it took 5+ minutes for it to die with the alka selzer in. This was extremely hard to look at as I had had this fish almost 8 years and was very attached to it. (It was emaciated, had no muscle tone, and its eyes were sinking into its head as these weird fluid? filled lense grew on the outside of its head when I finally put it down last year.I waited WAY too long to end its life.)
To the point, I invested in some clove oil after this and used it airstone to get it mixed with the water (otherwise it didn't do much other than sit at the surface of the water). I used the clove oil over the next 6 months when I had to put down other 3 of my goldfish I had almost 8 years that I saved as they had been feeder fish and it worked great. (I got most of them around the same time and they seemed to start showing signs of their ages and deformities from poor genetics.) The fish fell asleep quickly without panicking or obvious suffering. For this reason I DO NOT recommend alka selzer for the fish. Clove oil in my opinion is much better and for me was been 100% successful so far with euthanizing fish larger than fry in the most humane way possible. I bought a tiny bottle because larger quantities are quite expensive. Clove oil is a bit hard to find. They don't seem to be sold at regular drug stores. I had to look on ebay to get it.

Hey, Renee. I just double-checked to find out for sure, but you can get clove oil online from Lucky Vitamin (that's where I get my 100% calcium carbonate powder; I have to take it WITHOUT the Vitamin D, and the pharmacies can't get it that way--my Aunt recommended them thru a friend of hers). Just type in Clove Oil in their search bar. They have 100% Pure Clove Oil from Now Foods: 1 oz for $4.49; 2 oz for $7.70; and 4 oz for $12.99.
When I had my parathyroidectomy at the begining of May '13, the doctor had me start out by taking 10 tsp of the 100% powder 4 x/ day. I was able to buy 12 bottles for $69 (no shipping fee for that amount), and I went thru that many bottles a month. The doctor said that my bones were "hungry" and I was taking that much for close to 5 months; I've slowly been weaned down about 1 bottle per month now. When I order more of the calcium next month, I'll order some Clove Oil, too. How much do you use?

I don't know what I've hit when I've been typing, but that last post was the second time that I've ended up with part of my post in italics.
