I don't know what I've hit when I've been typing, but that last post was the second time that I've ended up with part of my post in italics. Just edit the post and remove the and at the front and end of the paragraph.

Thanks for the recommendations on places to get clove oil. I knew I could find it plenty of places online, but when I shop online, I pretty much stick to the same websites I know are trustworthy (like Everything Aquatic. I got a 1oz bottle, but only because I don't euthanize fish often (my goldfish all seem to live to around 8 years) and when I do, only a few drips per gallon in the container I euthanize them in. I believe Carl has an article with the dosages to give if I remember correctly. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find it. :/ I was not exact on the dosage. I used probably 10 drips for one fish when I panicked because it wasn't dying, just swimming and being scared. Then I discovered that I needed to use a bubbler to mix it with the water. After that, the fish went straight to sleep. I hear that clove oil in SMALLER amounts can be used to sedate fish. However, I personally don't agree with the idea for sedation since I imagine it could have negative effects on the fish. I'll let you know if I find the page on clove oil again angelminx. Renee

I assume that the bubbler you mean is like an airstone, or some such?

I use Clove Oil. I euthanize Betta, and what I do is take a Q-tip and dip both ends into the CL. I use a 32 oz mason jar 1/2 full. Drop in with fish and cover. Ck on the fish 30 mins later. I've use the freeze treatment, but noticed the gills extended. To me, that doesn't look like no pain. I've used Scalding water, won't EVER do that again. A friend accidentally dropped a Betta down the disposal and couldn't retrieve it...I just can't do that.

When I said bubbler, I meant a small air pump with airline tubing attached to it. Since it was to put down the fish and the aerator was the smallest I had, I didn't actually bother to put an airstone on the end of the tubing. My mom always calls air pumps bubblers. I picked that up from her. lol

>>> DO NOT recommend alk selzer anymore. It seems to not work on larger fish. I recommend clove oil over it because the fish fall asleep opposed to panicking and suffucating in the alka selzer when it doesn't work. I use clove oil....I put some aquarium water in a container large enough for the fish. The clover oil needs be agitated in some of the water. I shake a few drops in some aquarium water. I add more clove oil until the fish dies. Placing a fish in cold water or ice is not a good way to put a fish down. I imagine that is quite painful for the fish. With clove oil, the fish appears to die very peacefully. There are sites online that outline the clove oil process.
