Awesome to see progress. Sorry for the hiccups.
Typically, beach sand is more polluted than clean bagged sand... Something to think about.
So your filling from the bottom now? and feeding to the sump how?
The RO you have outside. That's topping off with a float valve?
Excited to see some coral and fish in this build!

Hiccups to be expected. Yes - filling from the bottom but fluid travels all the way to the top and back down before it discharges into the bottom of the tank. There are three tubes in the column .. The center tube is gravity overflow back to the sump/refugium. RO is outside along with protein skimmer/sand filter and UV. RO tops off with a float - float is in but the float ball will be installed once I have the system balanced. Once I get the hiccups taken care of we will build the ID wall cleaner system. This we planned on automating a wiper ring to slowly wipe the walls on a scheduled basis via a ball screw assembly and stepper motor. -but never maintaining a saltwater tank before I am unsure of the frequency needed to clean the ID. This is probably a question with a million variables and I wonder if the elaborate system is necessary.... Any ETA on the Orphec/Amazonas?

Got it!
Checking with Orphek now. They said 12 business days, plus shipping. It's been 15 business days. I'll let you know asap.

Thanks for the update Do you mind labeling the flow pattern/schematic of what is going on in the sump up to where it heads back to the main aquarium? Attachment DeletedCarl

Orphek says it will be ready to ship on 1/18. They apologized for the delay.

Here is a sketch of the flow - not sure if the shower effect in the sump helps anything or has an adverse effect but it was easy to do and would be easy to remove. I thought it may help "break up/aerate" the water. We are re-installing the column with a different seal that should take care of the leak. Next is the I.D. wiper assembly. Not having previous experience with salt water tanks we are unclear of the frequency in which the inside walls need to be cleaned and wonder if the elaborate automated wiper ring is necessary. Any thoughts? Leon

Thanks for the drawing of the flow pattern, this helps a lot! I think the aeration feature within the sump is a good idea and shows some really interesting outside the box thinking! My only suggestion at this time is with the UV being on the main line, I would suggest two 25 Watt UVs coupled one after the other as the flow may be too high for just one to be effective. Generally once per week to two weeks the inside of the glass/acrylic will need to be cleaned so as to keep the aquarium looking "sharp" Carl

We are back up and running - the new seal worked and all sealed up. We experimented with the 3rd pump inside the main tank attached to a sleeve that goes over the column. As suggested earlier the pump pulls from the bottom and discharges higher through several points along the sleeve. We used the Rio 32 and all worked except the cord on the pump is short - only about 6' so we couldn't get the pump down very far and the connection is only a couple inches from the water. Any options for a longer cord?

May want to measure the flow to know how fast it's going through the sterilizer...
You could cut the cord and extend it... Just make the cut out of water.
Wiping a tank once a week or other week is "normal", if you had an automated cleaner, it would keep it super clean everyday. You could always start with a good ol'fashion manual magnet cleaner you just take a couple minutes to clean when needed.

We are getting about 14/15 GPM from the main pump through the UV.
Can't cut the cord - the problem is there is not enough cord to place the pump at the bottom of the tank. Is there a longer cord option?
I am lazy and will automate the cleaning process!

Is there a longer cord option? I am lazy and will automate the cleaning process! Little fast on the flow. 750-875 would be best for level one for your size tank and the size of the sterilizer. Could double check the flow and add a ball valve if need be. You can add more cord and make the cut where it will be under water. Use the shrink wrap for the slice with silicone. It will make it waterproof. Your cleaner is fun idea, so if you can, I don't see why not.

I did not see much on the AAQ site about power heads. Currently the plan is to use the Rio 32 - pump into the sleeve in column and discharge through several holes towards the the top half. What we have learned of coral is that we need waves or flow - think it would work better to use powerheads pointing up and skip the internal Rio 32?

The LED has been shipped! Fedex: 717966593004 The Rio line are the better power heads. I would think the Rio 32 would be a good choice thinking of head pressure. You might consider pumping two on a wave controller. www.americanaquariumproducts.com/WaveController.html

So awesome. How neat! The column turned out so nice. Orphek will be happy to see this on a private tank. You're the first from what they told me.
