Hi Jenny, welcome to Everything Aquatic! Can you provide your water parameters including ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, pH, GH, KH? What do you feed these fish? Any aggressive behavior? A bath might be a good start, but knowing the water parameters is important as these are symptoms can be from water conditions. Make sure there is no decomposing mulm or high DOC in your aquarium, as this can encourage fungus/saprolegnia. Make sure your canister filter is not a collection point for mulm either. Also any pictures you can provide might be helpful too, if only to eliminate possibilities. The Medicated Wonder Shells would a be a relatively safe mild to moderate treatment for in tank use, but something stronger may be needed. Until I know more, for the baths I would suggest the Methylene Blue, salt (sodium chloride), and MAYBE the Furan 2 along with Kanamycin Further Reading: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Aquarium_Disease.htmlwww.fishbeginner.info/home/my-fish-are-sick-what-do-i-do/Carl

Hi carl, I have been researching American aquarium, & also purchased some items u suggest. .one of my gf has has cloud eye over a year now..I research on internet, overload of misinformation & finally found your research and forum, also I use strip for testing, I know it's not the best but seems to work and every time I take water to a pet store for testing it matches what I got on strips..pH 7.8 kh 180 gh 200 nitrite 0 nitrate under 20, again this is a estimate , since it's strips..no aggressive tank mates, two of the gf are about 9 yrs old, eyes are hazy with one of the gf eyes completely white, it can't see, white patches and a clear blister on black more & he has no eyes!! Friend saved him and gave to me a few years back, he has no eyes but still eats, also ragged fins with some white edging where torn, I'll send pics, how can I send pictures?

Also I fees the fish cobalt gf pellets, shrimp brine pellets and cobalt flakes so small small black more tends to stay at top eating flakes, bigger gf eat almost all pellets before he makes it down there to get any, a pet store told me to mix a little metro and wet it with fish oil to mix, I held food back for 2 days, and squeezed few drops of a fish oil on food and added metronidazole last nite to a feeding, cleaned filters last night

Also when I get meds I ordered, when I do baths, do 1 fish at a time? Do I have to change water with every fish? Can I put all 4 fish in at same time in bath? I know if I give baths twice a day to make new medicated bath water & not use same water but just curious about how to do this with 4 fish..also should I salt main tank, someone said add half cup for each 10 gallon, so that would be 2 cups of aquarium salt for my tank, is that right or to much? This has been an on going problem, I have tried sooo many meds, it all started when I had to get a new tank and cycle it over a year ago if that helps, my biggest gf lost weight and one eye clouded over , I thought he injured it, then other eye clouded about 6 months later, actually when I think about it this problem has been going on over a year, spent so much money, I just wanna get tank in good condition and fish healthy, they eat very good but look bad, I'm lost on how to send pics, new to this forum thing

How do I send pics on this forum? There is an add attachment button on the upper right side of each reply (not quick reply) As well you you can use the insert an image feature in the tool bar. For this the image must already be "hosted" via photoshop, flicker, private website, bblogger, Facebook, instagram, etc. Carl

For baths, you can give a bath for all fish at one time, provided there is enough room and oxygen for all fish in the bath container. Throw out bath water after each and every bath You can add salt to your main tank, but nowhere near the amount you were advised More like 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons or 1 teaspoon per gallon at the most (which is what I would use in the bath as per our Fish Bath article) Please Read/Reference: www.aquarium-pond-answers.com/2008/03/salt-in-freshwater-aquariums.htmlwww.aquarium-pond-answers.com/2009/07/fish-baths.htmlSince this has been an ongoing issue for over a year, which an unstable bio cycle can certainly be part of the initial cause, I suggest reading and following the outline in the following article. This is one of my more researched and tested articles, and while nothing is 100%, following every step has proven to cut disease issues considerably as well as increased longevity. Interestingly, goldfish were the main test fish I used for the tests. www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Aquarium_Disease.htmlCarl

Thanks for the pictures. I cannot tell for sure on your Black Moor, but he/she appears to be showing both symptoms of Aeromonas as well as possibly Saprolegnia (only a very close up picture can confirm this as Saprolegnia is very distinctive close up). The Eye issues being displayed are often caused by Aeromonas (although Streptococcus is commonly a cause) What I do see are very weak/sick fish and both Aeromonas and Saprolegnia are most commonly the result of water parameters (at some point in the aquarium's history) I would definitely check for mulm, rotting organic material in the gravel, filters etc. Sometimes coated gravels such as you have can peal just enough to allow the perfect breeding ground for unhealthy decomposition (& bacterial buildup). Changing out 25% of the gravel in segments every 4-6 weeks can sometimes help with aquariums that constantly struggle with disease (I base this on performing this task several times over the years). For now, the Medicated baths with MB, 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon, Furan 2, & Kanaplex is suggested (along with direct application of MB to the most problematic areas on the fish). In the aquarium, I would just use the Medicated Wonder Shell as per directions along with a tablespoon of salt per 5 gallons (later an in-tank treatment may be needed if this is not strong enough) I would strongly urge a good UV Sterilizer as per our Disease Prevention article References/ Further Reading: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Vibrio_Aeromonas.htmlwww.americanaquariumproducts.com/Columnaris.html#funguswww.aquarium-pond-answers.com/2009/01/streptococcus-eye-infections.htmlwww.americanaquariumproducts.com/Aquarium_Disease.htmlCarl

And forgot to mention the gravel I purchased was plant based and also took out the plastic decor in tank and plan to purchase some silk plants from site, hopefully I can get fish healthy and would like to add some live plants to tank, any suggestions what type plant and a safe and good place to purchase from? Also will the 5 gallon pale be big enough for all 4 fish in medicated bath?

In a Fish Bath, I would use the recommended doe up to double the recommended dose per the amount of water used. Example in 2.5 gallons of water I would use 1/4 to 1/2 packet of Furan 2. For swabbing the eyes, I would use the Methylene Blue (directly, not diluted) Reference: www.aquarium-pond-answers.com/2009/07/fish-baths.htmlFor the fish feeding, I would use the Garlic Guard, Neomycin, and Metronidazole From Aquarium Medications Part 1; Fish Food Soak: "Generally a dose intended for 2-5 gallons of water treatment will work for a 15-30 minute fish food soak For instance with Neomycin, this would mean .10 grams (or one measure) of the brand "SeaChem Neoplex" per each fish food soak twice per day (usually for 7-10 days)"
Reference: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Aquarium_Medication.html#food_deliveryYes, the 5 gallon bucket should be large enough. I would consider adding air stone during the bath. Plastic plants are not a problem and no worse than silk. Both can be washed in hot water with a diluted bleach water solution I would wait on live plants until the fish have been 100% for at least one month. Our Planted Aquarium Care Article has some suggestions Reference: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/AquariumPlants.htmlGood! Yes, Jungle Start Right is an excellent product and an effective temporary Redox Reducer Carl
