Good luck with your bleaching Barbara! Please consider the use of UV Sterilization as a means of lowering disease incidences and improving fish immunity, especially on your most valuable fish tanks. Carl

Carl, I have a question. I have a friend who owns a LFS. He told me that when he ordered fish from people that used UV Sterilizers, that the fish didn't last very long in his tanks. He said that the fish seem to need this after being accustomed to it...is there any truth behind this? My goal is to spread endangered fish, and I'd hate to be setting someone else up for a loss.

He said that the fish seem to need this after being accustomed to it...is there any truth behind this? My goal is to spread endangered fish, and I'd hate to be setting someone else up for a loss. I can say quite bluntly that this is incorrect.. UV Sterilization has so many mis-truths that it makes me want to bang my head against the wall. As well I have spent so much time using control groups of tanks (mostly goldfish) and have documented the difference. I also still spend much time in research (partly to explain results I found that I could not explain at the time such as improved immunity). I would urge you to read my UV Sterilization article and Blog: UV Sterilization: (How UV sterilization works) . This article explains the benefits and myths about aquarium and pond uv sterilization;

Great points. I don't know what the distributor did in his tanks, but that he knew UV was being used, and that the fish died shortly upon arrival. It makes sense that it might be poor water conditions rather than anything else.
I know that getting UV sterilizers will be way out of my price range right now.

[/url] I understand, but often they are less than many think for UV Sterilizers of good quality, although beware of the cheapie Garden Treasures, Aqua Medic, and Jebo. Others such as the Coralife and Tetra are good, but often over priced. A 9 Watt Terminator UV is only $69.99. This is just my opinion here, but I have looked at these (& other aquarium filters or "tools" for a healthy tank) as a price comparison when compared to the cost of the fish and possible future medication treatments (not that a UV will alleviate all treatments, especially internal infections that are brought into the tank with a new arrival). For instance I have kept many FW tanks with Discus that cost more for one discus than the one UV. Then I simply look at my time (as per the hassle of treatment), & my personal value of my fish. My 14 gal. bio cube with an angel, Ram cichlid, and many other lower cost fish has a 5 watt UV. Please do not take the above as a lecture, but just how I place a value on a UV or other piece of aquarium equipment. Carl

Everyone in that tank seems quite healthy and happy, thanks for asking.
I'm battling this in 2 other tanks, have lost a few fish, but not a wipe out like I had expected. I hope that by tomorrow I'll see some improvement in my other 2 tanks, seemed like after the second treatment that everyone seemed better.
The rams are great!

Glad to hear it Barbara! It's great that your fish are doing better! This was a hard disease to treat. Congrats on handling it so well. I bet your 2 tanks infected with this disease will recover. Great work!
