Thanks everyone! I really like the Vals, I think I'm going to get some more someday. I'll keep the amazon that's in the middle of the tank, it's a little bigger, but I might replace the swords on the sides with more Vals and then the sides will have a nice balance.
Maybe I could move some java fern down there in the meantime. That right side looks so bare to me.

I finally got some pictures of my 30. They didn't turn out quite as well as the ones I accidentally deleted, but you can get the idea. As I was looking as them, the blue background makes the tank look pretty stark. One of these days, I'll have to get a more interesting background. (or it'd at least be nice if I could get my swords to grow again!) Anyway, here they are: Here's one of my cories, my SAE, and some of the Celebes Rainbows. The crypt luteas are bouncing back better from my algae outbreak then the amazons are. I think I'm eventually going to have to give up on them. This was sold to me as a sagittaria, but I've been wondering if it's actually a Val. Anyone have any idea? Whatever, it is, I love how they get twisty as they grow! More rainbows, a head and tail light tetra, and the biggest sissy scissortail rasbora ever. I think he's afraid of himself!

Yeah, when you format a disk or anything like that, you lose all the data stored on it, so all my pictures are gone! Oh well, life goes on.

I finally got my 30 gallon to where it's cleaned up and I'm not too ashamed to show it off anymore. A couple of the plants look pretty rough from all the algae problems I have had, but overall, it looks good and my fish are doing well, so I thought I'd share some pictures. Well, I took a bunch of pictures yesterday and was pretty happy with how they turned out. But this morning I accidentally formatted my memory stick before I uploaded them! It's a long story how I managed to do it, and it took me a while to figure it out, but I am so disappointed. Maybe I'll have good luck again tomorrow and the fish will be as cooperative as they were yesterday. Stay tuned! I really want to show off my cute Celebes Rainbows!

Wow! That's a long time. It's really impressive when you think about how little those motors are, and they run nonstop. Very cool.

I have one of those heaters that Carl posted a picture of. I got it at Petco, so if your friend has a Petco, maybe they will have it! It works very well!

I agree with 8 in the Corner. Don't be too hard on yourself!
What is the temperature of their house? When I had Finn at the office, I didn't have a heater, because it was always around 73 degrees in there. If your friend's house doesn't get too cold, maybe they could even do without? Will your friend try again?

This question popped into my head this afternoon as I was cleaning the whisper filter for my 10 gallon. It has been running basically nonstop for over 2 years. How long does a typical HOB filter last?

I did medicate her for about a week with Melafix, then stopped. She's been healing fine without it. Thanks for the advice. That's kind of what I was leaning toward, but I was looking for some smarter opinions than just mine. Thanks again. I'll keep you posted.

I used to feed Omega Freshwater flakes. Now I alternate between Aqueon and Spirulina 20.

I don't have Cardinals, but I have Head and Tail Light Tetras. Mine never eat off the bottom. If I put a sinking food in, they'll attack it until it gets about halfway down, then they give up on it and look for more food toward the top.
I think I had a hard time getting mine to eat when I first got them. It took me a couple of different flakes to get one they'd eat. Once they started eating, I was able to mix in other stuff without problems.

I have no idea how old she is. She's a Petsmart refugee, so who knows? I've had her for 10 months. I would think that females spend a lot more time on the shelf than a male. Is that usually the case, do you think? As for diet, I have Aqueon flakes, Spirulina 20, frozen brine shrimp, frozen bloodworms, and the occasional zucchini. Plus now that she's been by herself, I've been throwing in Betta Bio Gold pellets too. I tried to get a picture. I got 2 crappy shots in before she decided that was enough and went hiding behind some plants. I shall try again tomorrow. Her bottom fin is almost completely healed and her tail isn't far behind. I moved her to the hospital tank 2 weeks ago. (Sorry for neglecting that bit of info yesterday : At this point I'm just trying to figure out where to put her when she's healed up. Back to the 30? To the 10 with platies and whiteclouds? Too much thought! If I can narrow down the causes for the fin problem, I'm thinking maybe it would help me make a decision.

I removed Sally (my female betta) from my 30 gallon tank because her fins, especially the tail looked a little beat up. I never saw anyone pick on her, but I took her out just to be on the safe side. I am wondering if she may not have been getting quite enough food, being in there with so many faster swimming fish. I tried to make sure she get food, but sometimes I didn't have time to watch. Could that be a cause of fin deterioration? Water parameters were fine and no one else was having any problems. Another possibility is age, isn't it?

I wonder about fish that are jumpers with this acclimatizing method. If you have the fish in the bag and are filling that bag with tank water, won't that make it easier for a jumpy fish to escape? I always put my fish in a bucket while I acclimatize them. Once I bought 3 or 4 scissortail rasboras and they were in the bucket. Once the water level got high enough, which wasn't that close to the top of the tank, the biggest fish jumped out! I got to him and returned him to the water, but he only lasted a couple more hours after that. Now I always cover the bucket with a towel so they can't jump out. It would be hard to cover a bag. Although maybe the narrowness of the bag will prevent jumping, I don't know. Just food for thought.
