After I get the 55 gal up and running. Want to put my Betta and some plants, what else cool could I put with him? Something easy, but don't breed alot. Also I will put some of the baby snails in there. I know there goes the breeding, but their not as bad as the lady's that I bought the tank from... she had 100's of them in her tanks! Any suggestions?

Cories are fun! While your betta is hanging out near the top of your tank, cories will zip around the gravel looking for something to eat all time.

well, if you put your betta in there, the cichlids are out of the question if you want fish that don't breed a lot, you're best off with schooling fish here is an idea of a setup: 1 male betta 6 short finned serpae tetras 6 glow light tetras 6 cardinal tetras 3 otocinclus 3 cory cats ~~~~~~~~~ Remember to change your UV Bulbs every six months in your UV Sterilizer

Hey Eve, is the way you have them listed the way they are in the tank? Are they pretty easy? Have been looking at the cichids, found out I don't know nothing about what type to get. I really don't want my Betta hurt either Course than again I don't know much about the fish you posted either....But I'm a great learner....sometimes

the fish i mentioned are all schooling fish and pretty hardy as long as you buy 6 of them, you won't see any fin nipping going on
you can introduce them in any way you want, just make sure you introduce one species at a time as a group
to make it easier on the filter only introduce one species every week or every other week that way you won't crush your tank
they're easy to take care off
just feed them once or twice a day fast them once a week for a whole day, especially important for the betta only 1 food needed for your top fish and only shrimp pellets or algae pellets for the bottom feeders
i will pull up some profiles for either species later tonite for you to read up on them
but it will definitely make your tank colorful
i might give you also another idea on another setup with other schooling fish species

Eve - I think that was a great very sensible reply! simple and easy and non- aggressive - her betta is the main priority I take it - don't know much about them - white about some white cloud minnows?

i believe a betta would do alright with ram cichlids....as long as there was floating cover. rams are very very docile lil critters. i have never tried the 2 species. if someone else has they may be able to confirm or reject my hunch.

Great would love to see what you come up with Eve.So I could do a little research as how to set up the tank and stuff. But I'm sure I will have lots of Yes John my Betta is my 1st worry.. could always keep him in the 2gal but...but really don't want too. Bike I have checked out on some ram's , very nice looking fish, are they for a beginner? Oh well I do have awhile before I get the 55 gal going.

I betta hould be fine in a community tank unless of course it is a those super agressive individuals which is rare. Bettas al have different personalities. lol By the way, is your betta male for female? With female bettas, you can keep more than 1 in a tank. But try to avoid fish with long, colorful finnage, especially with male bettas who can mistake the fish for a betta and attack it. Other than that, you should be ok. Bettas are very easy to keep.

her suggestion is actually a good one. i always recommend cichlids cause they are my fav and the prettiest in my humble opiunion. as far as rams tho....they are easy to moderate for difficulty in keeping them.

have heard the germans are a little difficult to keep and only live 3 years....I'm still gonna try but 3 years sucks!

i agree bike, regards cichlids being the favorites however, with my suggestion, i really went from what was wanted to be put in as well, which is a betta and i personally wouldn't keep them with cichlids murdock, yes 3 years is short, but well lived and enjoyed

my roomie keeps yellows, and a few tiger barbs with 2 male bettas in a 33 gallon. there is floating vegetation and the bettas stay at their own ends 3 feet away. actually, i am not sure the other fish even realize the bettas are there, not to mention i doubt the bettas suspect each other either....

one thing i will always say
just because it works for one person, doesn't mean it works for the other!!!
it's usually really about the personalities of the fish
