Watching the goldfish last night and low behold, Spot was chasing her around. Nudging her belly. Eggs were flying out!! Fats and crash were eating them as fast as they came out! Shame would have liked to save some, as Fred is the black moor.. Maybe next time? Guess keeping the temp. the same helped? Alls peaceful this Morning, was kinda worried about her last night. Boy is she skinny now!! ;D Seems like every fish/snail that I have are having lots of fun lately, must be happy huh? ;D

Congrats Demfish. Are you going to try to raise goldfish fry? I her goldfish are hard to breed indoors but mine were nudging and a few eggs came out when they were in a 10 gallon!! I think they were too immature to produce a lot but now that 8 of them are in the 40, I migth get a surprise this summer which is the typical time goldfish spawn! lol

If they're breeding then they must be happy! It shows that you're taking really good care of your fish. I hope you get some babies that don't immediately get swallowed!

My joking aside yesterday, I agree that you have done well to get Fred and Spot to spawn.. I know my only real succeeses for goldfish fry were in ponds with heavy underwater root stuctures (usually water iris) where the eggs could fall unharmed and the fry could hatch and mature un-bothered by other fish. Crash, spot & Fred (fred is in the background); is this picture correct? Carl

Yes that's them Carl, kinda old picture, as Fred has grown a lot since! Guess I better start thinking up a new name for her? Heres a video of them, was toward's the last of the spawn, she was running out of steam. Getting ready to do a water change, see if any eggs are left in the plants. Also just wanted to let you all know...That I have learned so much here at EA! So I guess this is a group effort!! lol

Nice video. That's what my goldfish do in summer. Since goldfish in both my 10 gallons were doing that this summer and I found eggs, who knows what I'll find next summer in the 40. Congrats! Are there any eggs left?

Well I did a water change yesterday, took out one plant and rinsed it in tank water. Seen 7 eggs in bucket. They were nice and clear when I put them in plastic container, then put then in the 10 gal. This morning when I woke up...They were cloudy So I guess they went bad overnight? Oh well maybe some in the tank will make it?

Goodluck...I don't think you need a new name for Fred, it just gives her a more unique name for being a girl.

This whole thing with the fish being named Fred makes me think of the cockatiel I used to have. When we bought the bird we were assured that it was an albino male, even though it did have faint markings like a female. We named the bird Ernie but after a few weeks I began having suspicions that our birdy was a girl. Everyone, including the breeder said I was crazy and no way the bird was a girl. I kept saying that it was too quiet for a boy and blah blah blah the argument went on for about a year. Then, right as Hurricane Ivan was pounding our house and scaring the you know what out of us the bird started screaming bloody murder. We lifted up the blanket covering the cage and sure enough there was Ernie laying eggs! Since she already knew her name and responded to it we figured it was just too confusing to try and change the name. So we just laughingly told everyone Ernie was short for Ernita. You could just tell everyone that Fred is short for Frederica!
P.S. That's an awesome video, I had never seen goldfish spawn before.

My spawned in a 10 gallon. Now that's weird for fish that are only supposed to breed in ponds or 100 gallons or larger. I also had 5 fish in each of the two 10 gallons they were in and in both tanks they spawned. (No babies survived though) They were way overstocked but I took super good care of them. Now I have 8 in the 40 and only 2 in a 10. I wonder what I'll end up with next year. lol

Congrats. I've never found a live baby goldfish from when my goldfish spawn but I've done a lot of research on it. Unless you want the adults to eat them or filter to suck them up, you'll have to set up a seperate tank for them, probably a pretty big one for growout. I believe the babies can tolerate a similar temperature as the adults, maybe 68 or above. You'll need to feed them BBS, microworms, liquid fry starter, something of that type. Good luck! I wonder how many there are.

Cool, congrats from me too.
Fine powdered vegetable/spirulina and regular flakes works too.
My goldfish raising experience is in ponds with many roots/tubers that allowed tiny larval and other growth that the fry picked on, but I did supplement with powdered Spirulina flake and similar which they gobbled up!

Oh and thanks for all the help!! Don't have fry food, so I put some of the gel food I made. Has anyone ever heard of putting a drop of milk in for them? Also what's this about flukes? Kinda read that you need to treat GF fry with prazipro? sp? Any truth to this? Would really like it to live!

Your gel food may be fine as well as powdering some flake food with your fingers as I noted earlier.
I would NOT use milk as this would just mix with the water and breed bacteria.
Crumbled hard boiled egg may consumed as well (many packaged fry foods have this as their #1 ingredient).
As for treatment with Prazipro for Flukes, I have not heard this, but that does not mean it is not effective or used by knowledgeable goldfish breeders. I have never used this in my ponds that I raised goldfish in, and had not die offs of fry (that I know of). Most of these ponds were very healthy though and included UV Sterilization as well.

Congrats again Demfish. I love your video. If you look in the tank you might find more, goldfish can produce over a thousand eggs. As for the advice I gave, I didn't realize that you could giv them powdered flake food which Carl corrected me on. In the research I've done on goldfish breeding, I've alwasy visited sites that were very technical and I guess they don't realize that you don't have to feed baby goldfish live food. Good luck with the baby goldfish. Be sure to name it Puon. lol
