Hello, I am treating 2 mollies that have ulcers. One has it on the top of her head and the male has it on the back of his tail. Long story short we had a bout of Columnaris and these two fish have been treated but their ulcers have not completely healed. I was using salt and stressgard for the ulcers and they seemed to be improving until 2 days ago. They are in a QT with Kanaplex and Furan yellow. My question is - How long do the ulcers take to heal after the treatment? I was planning to do the initial dosing and assess at the end of treatment if further meds are required but not sure how I can assess that based on the wounds? In the human world wounds take time to heal even after the antibiotics not sure about fish? They are both active and eating well. Thank you in advance for any tips/advice! Attachments:

Thank you kindly for your response! I was able to get my other molly into a small redder cup to get a closer look at his tail wound that was healing and getting smaller but suddenly began to get bigger. Im not sure what Iam looking at here, any advice? Thanks!

I'm sorry for your little guys!
How are they doing now? By chance are you using any extra minerals for these guys for normal health? Do you know your KH and GH reading?
All the best for a successful treatment!

I'm sorry for your little guys! How are they doing now? By chance are you using any extra minerals for these guys for normal health? Do you know your KH and GH reading? All the best for a successful treatment! Thank you for your response. My male molly with the tail wound passed this morning. Poor guy I was really hoping to be able to help him. The female with the head wound is still doing good- eating and swimming like her normal self. I have a wondershell in the QT tank with her. Ive been using strips to test the KH and GH. I purchased the API GH and KH kit but honestly can’t quite figure out how to use it yet. Ive been keeping AAP wondershells in all of our tanks since I discovered them on your website. Prior to finding AAP website I really didnt understand or wasn’t educated on redox etc. I do weekly water changes with gravel cleanings and our water here in NJ is on the harder side. This entire battle with infection began a few months ago and is absolutely my fault. We went away on a camping trip and I moved around some of my plugs before we left so I could plug in an Alexa to drop in and check on my main 55G tank. Well when I did that I accidentally didnt plug my canister back in all the way and it was off for 2 days. I have a small HOB on the tank as well and that luckily was still running but for sure not enough. After that event I lost a lot of my fish which was oddly only my Mollies. I have swords, mollies and platys in there and the only fish that have died/gotten sick is the molly fish. They were babies that I raised from fry so I wonder of they are genetically weaker fish as well. Anyways, I felt and still feel so bad about the incident. I appreciate the help you all have provided and advice.

Sorry for your loss Looking at your numbers, your KH (alkalinity) and pH are too low for mollies. Wonder Shells do not help for these paramters (they help for others which look good) I would consider AAP/SeaChem Alkalinty or Malawi Buffer for these. Thank you Carl! I appreciate your feedback. I will order one of those. This was from my QT tank so it’s not quite as set up as my main 55G but I will also double check that tank to be sure it has the proper KH and Ph as well.

My little lady is still chugging along. Iam curious if as her wound closes/heals will the color of the scales/tissue return to match the rest of her body or does the regernarated tissue remain white like a scar tissue? I will try to get a good picture of it and post it

Other times I've seen nearly 100% healing

Im adding some pictures I was able to get of her tonight I added a side by side picture of when I started her treatment 1/9/23. I did the initial antibiotic treatment with kanaplex and nitrofurazone yellow. Iam doing stressgard daily and she has a wondershell in the tank (non medicated) She is eating and behaving normally. I thought it was looking better and getting smaller do you feel that it still looks infected? Iam not able to visualize fuzzy or cottony growth unless Im just not sure what Iam looking at which is completely possible. The last pictures are the most up to date with the side by side being the most recent on the left and the picture on the right is when we began the treatment. Thank you again for your help.

Thank you for pointing out the side to side pictures, as that does help.
There definitely is improvement, and I do not want you to over medicate your aquarium. The Stressguard daily along with the Wonder Shell are both definitely helpful, but if possible, a swab with AAP Wound Control or at least MethyBlu would be helpful IMO.

Thank you so much Carl! I have been watching her closely and doing water changes, using the regular WS and stressgard. I hope she continues to improve. She seems to be doing really well with her eating (feeding Omnivore) and activity level so Iam so thankful for that. I did purchase the medicated WS and nitrofuracin green so I have it on hand just in case anything comes up. I also purchased methylene blue as well but she was not having me chasing her around the tank for swabs lol. I tried but she is fast and I didnt want to hurt her or stress her by trying so much. I did wonder though is it ok to put the Methylene blue around her eye? I gave my other fish with the tail wound swabs and also tried him in a bath with it but I had no idea how to dispose of the bucket of blue water. Is it drain safe? I did pour it down the sink because I had no idea what else to do with it. Thank you again for so much advice and help throughout this process. Ive added her before and after pictures comparing today (left) and 1/9 on the right for reference.

Yes, MB is 100% safe around the eyes and gills too.
MB is drain safe, but it might stain a porcelain sink

Glad I'm following along. Carl is giving great advise and I'm glad we figured out the KH to. Looks like your stabilizing everything and now just having to focus on helping your fish buddy recover. Great job.
Let us know how the direct treatment works.
