I have updated the "Aquarium Medications; Part 2" article, in particular the section dealing with the use of Eyrthromycin www.americanaquariumproducts.com/AquariumMedication2.htmlHere is an excerpt: "Erythromycin is most effective for gram-positive (the drug of choice for Streptococcus & Eye Infections in fish) and SOME gram negative bacteria and fungus appearing diseases, not what is generally considered true fungus).
In fact there is sadly much misinformation about the use of Erythromycin for "True Fungus" which is incorrect as one Betta Forum diagnostics incorrectly recommended Erythromycin for Fungus which any check of most medical literature will show NO recommendations for such treatment. The use of Erythromycin for a true fungal infection will waste precious time and likely result in the death of your fish. If it is effective, the aquarium keeper likely was NOT dealing with a fungus.
As well some websites and social media such as an unfortunately popular YouTube channel recommends Erythromycin as a first choice for fish fin rot, even though most causes of Fin rot are gram negative. It is noteworthy that Maracyn and API Erythromycin are both the less effective and less wide spectrum Erythromycin Sulfate versus the more wide spectrum Erythromycin Phosphate (sold under AAP Myacin). Even with Erythromycin Phosphate, it is still not the antibiotic or antimicrobrial of choice for fish fin rot.
As I mentioned earlier, it is also noteworthy that not all Erythromycin is equal. Most is sold as Erythromycin Sulfate, which is less effective and even has a lower spectrum of treatment than the preferred but often hard to find Phosphate. Currently the only available product with Erythromycin Phosphate is AAP Myacin."
