still having trouble w/ my last ram - what I thought and treated for ich has not gone away - thought it was fungus - started to spread - a little on the tip of the tail and a few growths of white stuff on his side - used formalin and malachite green per staff suggestions, nothing happened over 3 days - per carl's suggestion added triple sulfa and quick cure which is basically malachite green and foralin - day 2 no progress - have done a 25% water change and removed the carbon from my filter as suggested on the instructions for the triple sulfa - how long before I see results? any suggestions? he swims and eats fine - justs hides a lot.....not what I had in mind when I started this project.....am ready to euthanize him

I would recommend at least 3 treatments of Triple Sulfa as well (4-5 sometimes is necessary). Also, carbon is best out for Quick Cure as well. Can you provide a picture? How have your water parameters been? Does this "white stuff" look fuzzy, threadlike (like bread mold) or cauliflower like? The first describes Columnaris best, the second Saprolegnia/fungus. the third Lymphosystis (which is viral and basically non treatable BUT generally goes away on its own. although Usnic acid does have some success for this) Carl

have no camera anymore - daughter moved out - looks like cotton fluff - like a mold Sorry That describes fungus/saprolegnia, which is opportunistic and for which you are following a good coarse of action. See Columnaris, Fungus, SaprolegniaSince this is opportunistic, water parameters is also important: stable pH, minerals, even salt in the aquarium (at least for now). A weak fish from other issues (which is what my guess is the root cause) is a major factor in this type of infection. The baths can be very effective for this. The fact that he eats is a very strong positive, as this is important for a weak fish, try and vary his diest as much as possible, I strongly recommend a Spirulina based flake for their natural immune boosting abilities, see this article: Spirulina Algae; The aquatic health benefits for Tropical, Marine and GoldfishCarl

read the articles long before I posted this to you....LOL - I thought it might be coulmnaris but his mouth is fine - all the articles mention the mouth as well.....seems like I'm following the right course of action - am worried the formalin is gonna whack my 4 yeear old sliver dollar, my hatchets and my rasboras - 1/2 dose for tetras is what the triple sulfa said - I just don't want to lose the whole tank! can't seem to pm you on EA - doesn't recognize "carl"......

Click on my name to get to my profile and send a PM this way, OR email me. I would use Triple Sulfa FULL strength dispite what the packing says. I understand your concern with the Quick Cure for the other fish. The MB/salt bath is key as well, as it simply nursing back this poor guys immune system BTW, thanks for reading my articles Carl

I really hope this goes well for you, but even with this set back, please note that IMO you simply got a poor batch of German Blue Rams, which has happened to me before as well. In fact generally when I have lost them it often has been a whole "batch" in an order I recently received from a supplier/importer (I tried to buy my Rams from local breeders, like I did my angels and Discus, but availability was not reliable from local suppliers) Carl

Carl, you're so cool! I jsut had to add that * John, I'm no help either but to wish you well with the fish. Do you have a little 5 or 10 that you can put him in to med him without meding the other fish? Things like this scare me to death, I kind of freeze when my fish are sick and totally lose heart. I'm glad to see you are still working on the little guy:)

thanks all - he doesn't look any better today but he's still eating and swimming - just can't seem to make the moldy lookong poop go away Glad he is still hanging in there John. Since he is eating, try soaking foods in vitamins/minerals and feeding high Spirulina based fish food flakes as this will aid in immune boosting (if you have not already). The long "moldy poop" is a sign that he is sick.. Sometimes Metronidazole can help with this problem as can "experimental" Usnea. Carl

I'm so sorry that you're still having trouble with this ram! I got a bad pair of angelfish that had similar problems once. They died the second day of showing symptoms but luckily everybody else in the tank came through it ok without ever even seeming sick. Hopefully your other fish will be just fine since they have been with you a long time and so have had proper care. Good luck!

thanks all but I really have my doubts w/ this one......have never had any more serious than a few isolated instances of ich, so this is nerve wracking to me!
