what about a small angelfish as a tankmate for my ram?

what about a small angelfish as a tankmate for my ram? I have kept Angelfish many times with Rams, including presently (& the tank I have them in is only a 14 gallon bio cube). They do spar on occasion, and of coarse each fish is an individual, so it can vary as to personalities. I still like Bill's analogy of Rams Cichlids; "they are the Hippies of the Cichlid world", so it is rare fro them to be real aggressive. Also I think this will be a good idea because I still have to wonder if you got a "bad batch" of Rams, as others have also pointed out and maybe your survivor is not all that aggressive. Carl

am believing I have a survivor - thinking the others were weak from being overbred or inbred, possibly ammonia poisoning as well - called the lady who got them for me and she has agrred to buy some and keep them - if they live over 2-3 weeks, she'll give me some, if not, we'll just chalk it up to whatever....is there a particular variey of angels that'll stay small? called FP but she wasn't home

What I can say is that I have kept many angels over the years (they have always been a favorite of mine as most all cichlids are to be honest), and that angel specialist breeders are the best place to get them, and what I mean here is not that you need to buy directly from them, but the store you have gotten the Rams from can do this for you. I bought all my angels this way in later years rather than the mass fish farms (especially the ones in Thailand) as these Angels were vastly better in health and marking such as my current angel: Carl

I am also wanting to put Angels and Rams together. Combining the two species has been the driving concept of setting up my new tank. I can't remember who (sorry) but someone on the forum brought up the point that Rams and Angels do better together if your tank is at least 18" tall or so.

I mentioned the height in your intro question Kagome and with Angels, this you'd want to come into play because they wouldn't dwell in the lower part that Rams would, unless there isn't enough height in the tank. Plus if you look too at the physical lay out of an Angel, this is one fish that doesn't develop as much horizontally as it does vertically, stressing more the need for height in a tank then length. Mixing the 2 would be best done in a tank that has more height then length for the Angels sake. Other then Mbuna Africans, most bottom dwellers that pop into my mind, aren't that aggressive anyways and can probably make due with the lack of footprint space to compensate for the height the Angels would need.
Keeping the Angels up in the tank is the key to the harmony in a Ram/Angel set up, in my point of view, but these are also South Americans and I'd follow most anything Bill had to say on this subject, and of course Carl has Angels as well. I'm not positive on the experience of 8 and Eve on these species, except that I know Eve has kept Rams before.
For John, in an 20, though I probably wouldn't do this in a 20 tall but MAYBE if it's a 20 long, Kribensis which are African, but have evolved in waters that are very very close to SA standards could possibly work. Eve is big into that species, and if your Ram rather disappoints you, though Kribs are Africans, you'd certainly have a tank parameter set for this species in the future at any given time. They are quite the colorful fish and really only aggressive in breeding times as I understand it. This species is one of the few egg laying Africans too.

I live in northwest Florida actually. Rams are readily available from an extremely reputable dealer in Pensacola. The business is owned by a pair of brothers and they've been in business a looooooong time. Just to let you know just how long they've been at this, I remember going into their store with my parents when I was about 4 years old when my dad was stationed in Pensacola the first time (my dad is retired Navy). Now I'm thirty years old and I take my toddler son in there and it's still the same two guys running it. They only carry very high quality fish, I buy all my stock from them. I asked them last time I was in there and they said there was someone locally who bred the rams and they said the same guy breeds some of their other cichlids and some of their awesome assortment of fancy plecos. They only sell young Rams, only about an inch or so. I know you were saying the ones you got were full size. I figure I will get angels that are about the same size as the rams and everybody can grow up together, and hopefully no one shall eat his neighbor. Good luck with your new fishies!

the rams I got were 1-1/2", sorry if I misled anyone, but they were only 4-5 months old - weather is too clod to ship anything now - woke up to snow this morning! all my 20's are 18" deep - my new "aqua"zitions (LOL-pretty good for early morninh humor huh?) seem to be doing well - so far so good! the ram is out this morning - guess he figures no one new is a threat - hid all day yesterday - doesn't seem to have the personality of the labs - mine are very curious and come to the glass - Jon trained them well - I would suggest anyone interested in yellow labs to contact him! far superior in color and conformation than anything I saw yesterday at PetSnart and they has all sizes

Hey yo John it was awesome to talk to you yesterday! I've kept an (one) angel in a 20 high with a bunch of other littler fish with no problems. Course before I "knew" better, I kep angels with all sorts of things you supposidly aren't suppose to (gouramis, tiger barbs...always 3+ and the like) never had problems. I wouldn't think if you had one angel, even the big ones with a few rams that you'd have problems. Course I'm totally biased to the angels thinking them the best fish with no faults at all...lol
