I have a question that I never have been able to figure out. Out of the (4) fish "ID" books that I have and in different articles I have read, I have seen both the names Cynotilapia frontosa, and Cyphotilapia frontosa, but never together. For example, the Baesnch Aquarium Atlas Vol. 1 (the only one I have) lists the current (at the time) scientific name, and any synonyms, but does not include both of these names. I have never seen a photo of Cynotilapia frontosa, but have seen it listed quite a bit...Is this the same fish?

While I am not sure, I believe the genus part of their scientific name: Cyphotilapia was originally Cynotilapia, thus the confusion. But I am not positive, this is just my recollection and digging around this is not stated, but appears to possibly be the case

I think part of the confusion stems from the similarity in the names--there is no Cynotilapia frontosa. I was looking in one of my African Cichlid Books ("A Fish Keepers Guide to African Cichlids" by Paul Loiselle--I forgot I had these books; my Malawi book by Ad Konings is huge--really tall--and the shelf above had collapsed and was resting on top of it, so I hadn't paid attention to that section of the shelf for a while) mentions that Cynotilapia are micropredators, and Cyphotilapia are piscivores. [Dr. Loiselle's book does not have any photos of Cynotilapia.] Looking at the other 2 books (Lake Malawi), Cynotilapia (example: C. afra) are from Malawi, and Cyphotilapia are from Lake Tanganyika. Cynotilapia are Metriaclima (Pseudotropheus) zebra look-alikes.
