I put the outflow in the front right corner, on the same side as the intake.
Before I had the outflow in the rear left corner, facing the front glass at a 45-degree angle. It seem to produce a flow across the front of the tank and into the intake, leaving the back middle of the tank with zero water movement.
Now I appear to have a flow that goes from the right front to the left front, around the left side to the back, and then across to the intake, circulating water through 100% of the tank (I've monitored circulation by watching food particles and Ludwigia leaves travelling around the tank).

Good idea The only difficult part as I see it is aesthetically placing the return up in the front of the tank; were you able to hide this or does this really not matter? BTW, I have found a drop or two of Methylene Blue to be very useful in testing flow patterns and at this amount relatively inert. Carl

It's just below the surface, so the black trim hides it for the most part. It certainly doesn't show all the much more than it did before because covering it with plants isn't really possible (the outflow just beats them down).
