Goldfish Acting Strange Unknown Cause (LONG POST)

Hi everyone.

The last few days (it has been going on longer probably), I have noticed that my goldfish are acting strange in terms of putting their dorsel fins down and seeming less lively (excluding feeding time). Alden is doing the worst with this (most likely) because of a disease/problem it has. (It has had nodules on its tail for 3 years off and on that disappear and reappear that Carl claims may be (quote) "either a relatively benign (but stubborn) infection of Saprolegnia or Ichthyophonus..."

I also see that the nodules on Alden are spreading to other fish now instead of staying under control (the fact that this didn't spread much or progress is why I haven't been more aggressively treating Alden for the white nodules) . Aztec, a VERY long finned goldfish I have had 6 years now, has the same type of white nodules Alden has on its tail now. Aztec only had this very mildly a few months prior but now it is very obvious it has what Alden does.

However, fish that don't have the tail nodules seem to be stressing out more than usual as well such as Kona and Nemo with putting their dorsel fins down more than they should. Furthermore, Hansel's eye (the one that is darkened within the fish's eye lense for unknown reasons) is slightly worse though its other eye is still intact. (I have had Hansel about 5 years and it has a darkening of one of its eyes inside its lens appeared about 3 months ago and has not really changed much since). However, it worriess me that it has worsened now at a time when the fish are acting stressed.

Lastly, the area around one of Aztec's gills (the same very long finned fish I mentioned earlier above) keeps on turning a bright red on and off and now appears a dull red as if healing. The fish's other gill is fine and the breathing is normal.

To the point, most of these problems (the white/pink nodules on the tail of Alden spreading, Hansel's eye worsening, and Aztec getting the odd gill issue) all happened mostly (but not totally) within the past month.

I can not seem to find what is wrong with the fish specificily that is causing this or any stresser is present.

TANK READINGS "BEFORE" WATER CHANGE I DID TODAY (Prior to this, the water had not been changed for 3 weeks):

Ammonia: not tested
PH: 7.6
KH: 150
GH: 250
Nitrite: 0 as far as I remember
Nitrate: (I lost track of time after dipping in the test strip for this, but it was between 10 and 30)



SUMMARY OF FISH AND UNUSUAL SIGNS THEY ARE SHOWING:

Fish:

Aztec: nodules on tail fin, odd reddening around one gill but not the other, showing signs of stress/[putting dorsel fin down

Puon: none other than typical genetic bloating issues that are currently under control and completely unrelated to this, is not acting unusual in any way

Kona: dorsel fins down more than usual, no other signs

Nemo: dorsel fin down more than usual, on brief inspection, fins look clear even though the fins are long

Hansel: affected eye worsening, dorsel fin down "slightly" more than usual but hard to tell

Salyme: dorsel fin down more than usual, small red/unraised dot on tail that is likely just discoloration

Wickren: dorsel fin down slightly more than usual

Alden: fish appeared fairly stressed, dorsel fin all the way down at times, a bit lethargic, white nodules on tail look pretty bad


TANK INFO:

40 gallons, 8 goldfish from 2 1/2 to 6 inches INCLUDING fin length (minus fins the fish are not as long), HOB AquaClear made for 60 gallon tanks, Hydro Sponge 3 and large bubble wand, no gravel, fake plants, filter cleaned monthly, tank cleaned and siphoned out every 2 weeks.

HERE ARE THINGS THAT HAVE HAPPENED OUT OF THE ORDINARY THAT MAY HAVE TRIGGERED/CONTRIBUTED TO THIS:

1. Old hydro sponge #1 replaced with hydro sponge #3. I used a chunk of the old sponge from the hydro sponge 1 to help season the hydro sponge 3 by placing it tightly up against the new sponge for 2 weeks before removiing it for good.

2. Moved goldfish (Foneme) out of the 40 gallon and put in Puon in its place

3. Due to finals, did not change out any water or clean the tank for three weeks instead of the usual two

4. added bubble wand that may have led to overaeration of the tank (fish seem to be getting bubbles on their bodies from the wand that go away but keep collecting on them like the water is super oxygen saturated)

5. Added a large unmedicated wondershell in conjunction with SeaChem Marine Buffer that caused the PH, GH, and KH to go unusually high. (I estimate the PH went to 8.0 and the GH went over 350 at some pint)

6. Nitrate appears unusually low for tank not having been cleaned in 3 weeks (tank may be cycling?)

POSSIBLE REASONS FOR FISH ACTING SICK I CAN THINK OF:

1. Possible cycling due to change in filter media

2. stress from rise in PH, GH, KH

3. overaeration (The bubble wand REALLY aerates the tank and the fish have been swimming through the bubbles from the bubble wand every several minutes every day)

4. Addition of new fish Puon

5. From the tank not being cleaned on time (pretty unlikely since these guys typically get svery good care and the tank wasn't all that dirty still IMO)

6. Mild case of ich (a guess)

FIN TRIMMING:

One of the problems my fish are having is with the white and pink nodules/tail sores of their caudrel fins right now. The nodules only seem to affect fish that have very long fins and mainly on the bottom lobe of the fin. Many of my goldfish have very long fins- 1 has fins the length of its body and a few others have fins the length of about 3/4 of their bodies. These fish like Alden and Aztec seem prone to the white nodules due to the fins sometimes resting on the bottom of the tank . This ailment causes the fish stress/discomfort. I have heard of people trimming betta's fins when they have fin rot or to allow the fish to get around more easily. For my goldfish, it would be to get rid of and reduce the chance of them getting nodules on their tails

I have many questions regarding this before I got ahead with it in an effort to help the fish. (My apologies, this is very long)

1. Is cutting off a large portion of fishes' tail fins safe for the fish (say half of the tail length on very long tailed fish)?

2. Will trimming off a pretty large part of the fishes' tail fin cause the fish a lot of stress/bleeding? How much?

3. What should I use to trim the fins?

4. Are the chances of secondary infections high if a large portion of the fin is removed (ex. fungus or cottony growths attacking fins after cut)?

5. How much of the fin can safely be cut off at once?

6. After the fins are trimmed, is it advisable/safe to use Postassium Permanagate on the fins to help get rid ot the white nodules and prevent secondary infections?

7. Is this a high stress thing to do to a goldfish if done quickly and properly?

8. Is there any follow-up I will need to do after this to care for the fish's fins after they are cut besides keeping an eye on the fish and their tail fins?


Last, based on the info I gave, what does it seem might be causing the fish to act unusual with fin clamping and being less active, and what should I do about it?


Thanks in advance and my apologies for this insanely long message. Help/input is greatly appreciated. This is really worrying me since I have no ide what it is and appears to be getting worse by the day. For now, I have darkened the tank partially.

As for causes/reason, here are my thoughts:
[1] I doubt cycling is an issue

[2] pH rise can definitely be a stresser, KH, maybe if it is not stable and allows jumps in pH of either direction. GH NOT a problem at all, and in fact likely a positive for redox

[3] Aeration, may be a problem if fish are having difficulty swimming, otherwise not a problem

[4] Moving Puon may have introduced a bit of stress

[5] If Redox balance is poor, maybe the missed cleaning was an issue. You could also add Prime at full dose too.

[6] If Ich is present, this definitely could be an issue


Here are the best answers I can provide:

[1] I have done trimming (not on Bettas), but when too much trimming seems to open fish up for Columnaris , so other than the outer most rays, I would not recommend this.
Make sure to use Hydrogen Peroxide or Potassium Permanganate swab followed be a Methylene blue bath if you do perform this procedure (the first is as an antiseptic, the second MB is for healing.recovery)

[3] Very sharp hair/nail scissors

[4] Maybe, but if this is systemic it could make it worse

[7] If done as I noted, the fish should recover with 1 or 2 days from my experience

[8] A Medicated Wonder Shell or Triple Sulfa and MB Baths

Summary

There definitely a problem, but the cause is in question, I still stand by the age/genetics/and early life issues being the primary cause with little you can do for this.
You also may have to put your foot down and use Methylene Blue, and the addition of a UV Sterilizer may help, and certainly not hurt.

Thanks for the answers Carl. I think I will focus on whatever the stressor is and focus on the fin trimming later. I want to focus on the primary problem and not make whatever it is worse now via fin-trimming. The nodules on Alden's tail seems to be spreading more, but not to every fish. It also seems to get the fish with lomg fins and fin damage. (Ex. Aztec who tears itstail fins very easily due to their excessive length).

I agree that this is the cause for the eye issues Hansel has and other unexplained basically nonprogressgive issues that have come up. But the fact that all the fish in the tank are acting strangely at once tells me the other issue (with the fish putting down their fins and acting a bit sluggish) is not early life/genetics. If it was one fish and the rest were acting fine, I would think that could be a cause.


I blanketed the tank and am watching the fish closely. Hopefully the cause will show soon. I tested the water today.

KH: 120
PH: 7.2
GH: around 250
Nitrate: 15 is my estimate
Nitrite: seems like it is 0

Yes, however outside of the pH jump, nothing you have done of late has changed that is all that stressful unless something is being missed, and then maybe the pH swing is the culprit.
My point is we have to look at the common denominators and these weak fish issues is certainly one, maybe the pH was all that it took to start the "snowball" running down the hill.
As well that fact that darkening the tank is helping seems to indicate this as well.

BTW, this is too much to trim IMO.

Agreed. It is odd also that Puon was the last to show signs of stress (lowering dorsel fin) yesterday before I blanketed the 40 gallon. I find it kind of interesting since Puon is the newest fish there.

Luckily, this morning I briefly looked under the blankets and was VERY happy to see that the dorsel fins of the fish were 100% up including Alden!!! Last night when I unblanketed them partially to look at them, they started to put their dorsel fins back down again. So this is good news though it was only a very brief look. So far, so good.

P.S: I will also not be trimming fins though I wish there was some way to keep the fins from growing so long and being open to tearing/infection.

It looks like the goldfish most likely have ich. Alden's tail has MANY white spots on it, but none I could see on its other fins. A saw a few spots on my other goldfish's fins too. I have seen none itch as far as I can tell. They are acting very well considering that and spreading at a ridicously slow rate for ich This is VERY good though IMO because I know from personal experience, ich spreads and kills fast! I have been treating with Paraguard for 2 days now. This morning, 36 hours after the first treatment, I saw little to no change in Alden unfortunately. However, I know that ich medications are most effective when the ich is in the free-swimming stage so it may take another day to see good results. Tonight, I am adding the 3rd dose of Paraguard (along with a small water change) and am adding Triple Sulfa as per Carl's advice. Also, a wondershell to help with mineralization which should help the fish recover.

The infection on Alden appears moderate though the fish is not acting bad considering what it has. And for the others, they seem to have no spots or have a very mild case. I'm crossing my fingers and praying that they will get better/that I will not lose any fish.

Please provide a picture to double check this diagnosis.

Also it is noteworthy that Ich often progresses slowly when water conditions are optimum (and often is much less severe)

I would suggest treatment of Triple Sulfa at the same time as ParaGuard (Triple Sulfa is a Medication as per the Disease Prevention; Treatment article that I suggest always having on hand)

I would also perform Methylene Blue baths if at all possible

I added a full dose of both Triple Sulfa and Paraguard last night. I woke up this morning a bit past 10 to see Aztec and Puon swimming in circles. In a semi-panic (because I was starting 2 classes today and was going to be gone for 10 hours on top distressing of the state of the fish), I blanketed the tank thoroughly to make it very very dark, added the carbon to absorb the meds in the tank, and decided to wait until I got home and could properly assess the situation. I rushed to get ready after that and spent time between classes doing research on fish diseases including pictures, online searches, Carl's articles, etc.

Tonight I came home and lifted the blanket. The fish all had their dorsel fins up (except Puon) when I first looked at them, but started mild to moderately clamping their fins soon after I turned on a light and lifted some of the blankets off. Aztec was no longer swimming in circles, but Puon was while on the bottom turning in circles (Puon was at the bottom likely due to a combo of buoyancy issues and weakness and/or illness).

I watched the fish and all appear to be eating or at least looking for food including the worst off (Puon, Aztec, and Alden). As well, I saw red streaks on both Aztec and Alden's fins (seemiingly hemorrhagic septicemia). I also saw Alden twitch and show signs of discomfort and irritation although I saw no definite flashing. Alden's fins look clearer (the spots seem faded) and Aztec's spots seem better as well. Puon is lumpy at the moment which may be contributing to it resting at the bottom (though Puon is trying to swim around a bit in circles, in pretty aimless way, and mildly begging for food). If there is ich, i would say that the infestation is pretty mild now (provided what I first saw that resembled ich was not a bunch fresh more mild nodules on Alden and other fish's tails). The Paraguard did not seem effective, although the Triple Sulfa did seem to help in less than a day. I am going to remove the carbon again tomorrow, do a small water change, restart the treatment with Triple Sulfa without using Paraguard, and use a large medicated wondershell instad of the Paraguard. (I did not add a any wondershells last night as I had planned to.)

I spent an hour tonight trying to get pictures in the dark (with the help of a T2 light) after 10 hours at college. My camera battery was low and was able to get by with a quick recharge, but ultimately it kept shutting off on me and I had to call it quits for the night to recharge it. But I will have pictures and video up tomorrow.

Note: I had the tank blanketed for part of the previous week, but allowed the tank to be dim and uncovered the front at times, so the fish were not in total darkness as much as they are now. This may have decreased the speed the illness progressed IMO.

P.S. I would like to thank you for the help Carl both online and on the phone. I greatly appreciate it. I know you have been very busy and am feel bad troubling you with this. My apologies as well for repeating myself and prompting you to. I have been trying to explore all options in Internet searches, reading your articles, and on the phone (the phone is not the best way to discuss things with you at length). So you're pretty thorough with your fish and treatments. But I thought i'd let you know that when I was dealing with what I thought was hemorrhagic septicemia, as well a couple years back when I was dealing with this super bizarre ucler growth on my goldies I used a combo of metro and furan 2, did a double long 2 week treatment and it cleared everything right up.

Just for any ideas if the triple sulfa doesn't work. But I also know doing too many things is not good for the fish either, just for future ideas maybe.

Thanks for the input Sammie. I have a tendency to overdo things with my fish (you are right about that). Thanks for the treatment recommendations as well. I might try in the future. (It sounds like your fish have something similar to mine.)

I have sometimes seen a couple red streaks on fins and done nothing about it and it cleared up. But seeing as they have fin problems now and other issues, I think it is best to treat with Triple Sulfa for now especially since the fins are clearing up very fast with it.

Update: Today I put in what I believe is a medium medicated wondershell (I couldn't find any large ones) and 3 small ones to help make up for the lack of size. I also added Triple Sulfa, removed the carbon, and changed 4 gallons of water. Puon is no longer swimming in circles, but is swimming around the tank (not on the bottom) a bit aimlessly and pacing (though only bumping into things moderately).

Renee, in looking over your pictures and videos, I unfortunately do not see a specific problem that I can say: this is it!

What I can say is that not all fish are sick while others such as Puon sadly does not look at all well.

Using Puon as an example though, to me and from my experience I am 75% sure this is due to age, genetics, life history based on water parameters, what you have done (in good care past and present) and simply from the pictures provided.

I also believe the Medicated Wonder Shell with the Triple Sulfa is the best coarse of action outside of nothing at all (along with water changes and mineral supplements such as Wonder Shells)

Thanks for looking at these. I still don't know what's wrong with them either. Puon was eating yesterday but after I got home from school at 10pm, it showed no interest in food I put in and kept on racing to the top for air. Puon's tail fins also looks ragged/like it has small tears in many places like it was nibbled on. It's acting like it was picked on, had a med overdose, or is dying. I captured Puon and put it in a 1 gallon plastic container with holes I punched in it for water flow through it. The container is floating in the 40 gallon and I have air running in the floating 1 gallon container Puon is in. I put Puon in there to isolate it and to let it access air/the top more easily.

I am hoping Puon will survive, but am not counting on it....

I added the 2nd dose of Triple Sulfa tonight. I am a bit worried that the fish could be overmedicated however due to some Patraguard left behind. I have only changed about 7 gallons since the Paraguard treatment and had the carbon in the filter for only about a day before I started resumed the treatment with the Triple Sulfa and added the medicated wondershells. I am keeping a close eye on the fish for signs of possible overdose just in case.

Back to the topic of Puon, I convinced my mom to let me buy some Methyline Blue! Iif Puon survives, I want to give it an MB bath. Unfortunately, American Aquarium Products appears to be down. I am getting the "Page not found" error. I hope the downtime is short or scheduled and does not affect cause any problems for you Carl. If you need help, I have some backups of old versions of some of your articles on my computer.

Great that you can finally use Methylene Blue again!

This morning the site is fine, I do know that every once in a while the server stalls for about 3-5 minutes, however as per a Google Analytics test, our site is running 99% of the time and is "up" more than the average website.

I know how much you care about Puon, but I still stand by what I have said and that is he is suffering from old age, genetics, and early life exposure to terrible water conditions. I have seen this many times in the past and your pics and video confirm this for me.

I agree. Only my dying fish (especially Puon which my mom knows I care for one of the most) that changed her mind. If Puon makes it by the time the meds arrive (I am ordering right now), I will be giving Puon an MB bath. Unfortunately, I am only going to be using the MB for must-treatments and emergencies due to my tendency to spill and that a stain could change my mom's mind again on my use of it. But it is much better than what I have and will benefit my fish greatly.

I am glad the site is running again. I am going to order now.

I understand and agree on this. Whatever is making the fish act unusual in the tank probably aggravated this which seems to be the final straw for the fish. Though I am doing everything in my power to try to save Puon, I understand and accept that it mostly liekely won't live and if it somehow does for now, not much longer.

Great news! Yesterday when I went to do a 25% water change for the Triple Sulfa treatment, Puon started swimming around! The fish was still at the bottom of the container most of the time and doing what looked like head- standing ( not a good sign) while it rested on the bottom, but I think it was more of a combo of that the fish was spending time at the bottom of the container and wanted to get into the larger tank with the rest of the fish. Also, about an hour before I changed the water, I fed Puon and he/she ate and looked around the container for food.

During the water change, I took Puon with its container out of the tank (otherwise all water would drain out of the area container I had Puon in when I took 25% of the water out. The container is taped to the side of the tank so it won't sink.) Anyway, I was very happy to see Puon pacing the container (not on the bottom at all) while I performed the water change. After I was done, I was very happy to see Puon begging for food.

When I uncovered the tank this afternoon, I saw Puon sleeping at the bottom. I woke the fish with gentle tapping and it woke up and consumed the food I put in. On a brief glance just now (about 15 minutes since I woke the fish), Puon is swimming in the container seemingly searching for food!

I am very happy about the fish's unexpected recovery, but know it could take a turn for the worse again because of its age and genetic defects.

It definitely is. Puon seems much less bloated too now- almost normal.

I have seen Puon go to the bottom and stay there before when it was bloated due to some genetic issue when it was in the 10 gallon with Oranda. It would swim up to say, "Hi, feed me!" when I went up to the tank it was back then unless the bloating got very very bad. This (and whatever was causing the rest of the fish to act strange) is likely what caused Puon to stay at the bottom. As for the disorientedness, I think this was due to the fish being uncomfortable and trying to get to the top for air to stabilize itself but being unable to (the tank is 1 1/2 feet tall) and getting stressed out due to bottom-heavyness from being bloated. Poor osmoregulation (possibly identicated by the bloating) may have also come into play.

On the other hand, Aztec has not been coming up to the front of the tank with my other goldfish to beg for food/greet me when I uncover the tank. Aztec has always been a shy, skittish fish ( even staying in completely dark hiding places in the past until it felt like coming out or when it thoight I was going to feed it.

I glanced into the tank tonight to see Aztec around the back of the tank away from the other fish. Nemo (another fish that is shy in temperment which sometimes likes to hang out by itself) did what looked like might be minor chasing (unless it was swimming and Aztec was getting out of the way.) Aztec also appeared inactive and had its dorsel fin down partially at times despite the darkness from being having the tank semi-covered. I also saw one tear .5-1 inches on the top lobe of its extremely long fins. Tears in Aztec's tail fin are like this are common unfortunately because its fins are the length of its body and I imagine tear or get caught in things easily.

To the point, is having a goldfish in a 1 gallon tupaware container with holes in the sides (for water flow) and an aerator in a main tank typically very stressful? Puon adjusted very well to being kept in the container after a day, but Aztec is much more nervous. I would like to trade out Puon for Aztec in the container so I can keep an eye on her/him for several days. Is this a good idea? ]

My thought is while this might be mildly stressful, as long as the fish (Aztec) does not cause the fish to harm itself, I do not see a problem with this container (I would also add a small piece of a Wonder Shell, which I often add for long distance shipping such as bringing fish form LA to Oregon).

This said, the main reason I would consider performing this is for ease of baths (so as to chase the fish around for each bath) and/or to prevent injury from others.

For another very late update, the fish all recovered and are acting like they should now or very very close to it if they are under the weather at all. I haven't been watching them closely lately, but have seen no sluggishness or real fin clamping. As well, Aztec's fins are healing and the fish is coming to to beg like crazy for food when I come to the tank. It has recovered VERY well!

Unfortunately, Alden tore its fins during the treatment a month ago. Its was no where as severe as Aztec's fins loss is/was and is almost fully healed.. I blocked the filter intake more with some plants in case the fin long finned goldfish's tails were getting caught. :/

Puon's tail fin also became ragged during treatment a month ago when the fish were sick. Puon's fins aren't fully healed yet and am a bit concerned about some black coloration on the edge of its tail fin I saw. Nitrates are 20 or less and nitrite is 0. As well, I saw a tiny bit of black on Alden's tail fin where it got torn. So I am a bit concerned about it. I have not checked on its tail for several days. (Update: I VERY briefly looked at Puon's tail tonight and saw some no black though there could be some. Puon's tail is also healing well.)

Lastly, Puon was having trouble with bloating again (much less severe than last time) and put it in the same isolation container with water flow going in and out as last time(about a month ago). I just released Puon back in with the other fish tonight after 4 days and am making sure it is doing satisfactory when it comes to not getting stuck at the bottom.
