Hey guys, Sorry I haven't been around - have done nothing but work and study since I just wrote my national certification exam this last weekend, but now I am free for the time being whoop whoop. Anyways I noticed tonight that my fantail goldfish has a black cloudy eye. It's really odd, never seen anything like it before. It's not puffy or swollen or anything, but under the lens of the eye, his entire eye is black and when I shine my penlight to look at it closer I can still see his cornea and pupil under this haze, but I just thought it was absolutely bizarre that it was black. I tried to google any sort of answers or similar problems and I have come up with nothing. I am currently giving him a methylene blue bath with furan 2 since its the only broad spectrum anti biotic I have on hand at the moment. I also added salt. I will try to get some pictures tomorrow for you guys, I'll need to go get some batteries for my camera but it's too late to go tonight. But anyways, you guys are always helpful and have ideas so i hope someone can help me out Thanks, hope everyone has been well

Hi Sam, nice to hear from you at EA.
Your description is similar to what I have seen with fish going blind and for reasons I do not know, this seems to be much more common in goldfish.
Of coarse, I am not sure, but once you get a picture, this may help.
If this is the case, medications are not going to help. At this point I would only perform a Methylene Blue Bath (and maybe swab), but I would not medicate the aquarium

Hey Carl, Thanks for your quick answer. Here are some pics - I did managed to get methylene blue on the eye last night, my goldfish are all super tame and let me hold em so I just held him sideways and put some on his eye. He seemed really upset at me for the meth bath though, got stressed and started to float upside down so I had to feed him peas and then he was fine. Just really tempermental Also I should point out that this goldfish is probably 6 or 7 years old But here are some pics:

oh yeah, when I looked for awhile today I noticed that the black was actually on the eye itself, but the lens covering the eye is still clear and nothing is on it, its all on the cornea of the eye only.

I am sorry to say that that it appears your goldfish is going blind (at least from my experience) I would not bother stressing your fish with more baths or especially swabs. Carl

I am not sure if it is exactly the same, but I had something similar happen to one of my goldfish. Hansel (which I have had almost 5 years) had one of its eyes darken (the pupil of the eye inside the lens turned a rusty gold) and began looking slightly cloudy. The eye is not black like this fish and I think that my fish can still see out of that eye to some degree, but it has not progressed since I first saw it. It is only ONLY on the inside of teh eye like with your fish. If your fish going blind, but teh fish is fairly good at getting food and its other eye is fine, it should be able to get enough to eat even if there are other goldfish with full vision in the tank. Still, you should keep tabs on the fish, if it is able to compete well with the other goldfish for food, and how its eye is doing. The fish will most likely be fine, but I recommend monitoring the fish more just in case. I also concur with Carl on the medications if it is blindness. I hope that helps! Renee

Thanks guys, She still eats well, still having some issues with staying upright, that bath really made her mad but I am feeding peas and high fiber foods so in a day or two she should be back to normal. Thanks for the input

You're welcome.Sorry to hear that she's having a bit of trouble. Did she struggle a lot and possibly hurt herself or was she handled roughly during the bath? Also, with her not staying upright, is it a problem such as being weak/very stressed or a swimbladder type problem? Renee

Oh no, its just because she's a fantail with the bubble belly, they tend to have very tempermental digestive systems and if she doesnt get enough fiber rich foods or gets stressed out she basically gets gassy and it makes it hard for her to stay upright.
But the last two meals of peas has helped and she's alot better this morning, no worries. Also after i fed her last time I "held" her for awhile so that she didn't have to swim so hard to stay upright so she wouldn't get so stressed over it. I just put my hand on top so that it holds her from flipping over and she calms right down and just sits in my hand, it's kind of neat lol

I'm glad she is doing better. I have only ever kept comet goldfish so I wasn't as aware as you are about how prone fancy goldfish are to turning upside down. It is really cool that she lets you hold her while she eats. Mine would never stay still enough for that: they are everywhere when they are fed! lol Renee
