Is it necessary to have an HOB if you have Two sponge filters? in my 50 gallon tank I have two sponge filters and the hob but that one just never seems to do right, it seems to get slimy and the water doesn't want to come out right, half the time it just trickles even after I have cleaned it, would the sponge filters be enough?

Welcome back First, what brand/model is your HOB filter? It might be that your impeller and the well this sits is dirty and needs cleaning, as well as the intake tube. You can run an aquarium on just Sponge Filters ( I have on many occasions), however the HOB and Sponge Filter often make a good compliment to each other (depending upon the HOB filter, as the Aqua Clear is more similar to the Sponge Filter). The sponge filter is generally quite superior in bio filtration, while the HOB performs chemical filtration (carbon, etc.), and they are somewhat equal in mechanical filtration with the Sponge Filter being better for coarse debris while the HOB (depending upon brand) is generally better for fine debris. No problem with the placement of the question Sherry Hopefully cleaning the intake and impeller well can do the trick. It could also be a weak power supply as well to which there is nothing you can do other than replace this filter. Carl

Welcome back!
I have had problems with filters as well. I recommend taking the filter apart and trying to reach into every nook and cranny to clean it. Also, if you can pour tank water (not tapwater) through it after you've loosened the debris, it will aid in cleaning the filter.
I'm not sure what you use to clean your filter but I always use a toothbrush. lol
Good luck!
