The ballast in my 10g fry tank has failed. I replaced the 15w florescent bulb with a new spare I had and it just flickers. Unfortunately it's not the common aluminum can starter type but rather a hardwired plastic case that looks like this: i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss25/fishfever/10gflorescentballast.jpgI called Petsmart and Petco but they just sell the common can type of starter. If I could find one it could be easily replaced in 5-10 minutes (2 wire nuts and 4 wires that push into locking terminals on the lamp sockets). I guess the whole hood may end up having to be replaced if I can't find the ballast.

You should be able to replace this with a 14-20 watt magnetic ballast with either a bulb starter or the more common aluminum can type. Ballasts/StartersAs well maybe might consider retrofitting with a T2 lightCarl

Carl thanks for that info but I got lucky when I called the manufacturer and they are sending a replacement ballast in the mail. The company is All Glass Aquariums and the lady in customer service was very nice and helpful. I think they are under one umbrella with Aqueon and maybe some more companies. In the mean time I also found a replacement hood on Craig's list for a few bucks which fits fine. It will be nice to have a spare hood when I get the ballast or I can use it on my 10g hospital tank which currently has no hood or light.

I have to give a nice thumbs up to All Glass Aquariums (who seem to be possibly merged with Aqueon) as they did mail me a new ballast. It did take a little digging to find the person who could help me (item not in stores) but when I did she was very helpful. It only took about 10 minutes to remove the old one and install the new one. Since I bought a spare one in the mean time on CL, I can use it for the 10g hospital tank which never had a a light.

I believe Central Garden & Pet (a NYSE company) owns both now, pus many other well known pet brands such as Kaytee, Coralife, etc. Carl
