Thanks for updating your article. I just finished reading it. I do have a question on the German method of aquarium cleaning though. When you siphon using the German method, do you just siphon water randomly out (without aiming for the waste) or do you siphon out the bottom of the aquarium aiming to get waste out? I am a little confused on how it is done.

It sounds to me from reading this that the German method just involves removing water only and adding fresh water back in. They don't vacuum the gravel, just let the plants take care of the waste. I'd think that you would need a pretty heavily planted tank in order to use this method, however.
