Is the serpae the only one in the tank? I have 5 in my 55g and they are not aggressive/territorial at all...well to each other they are a bit "playful"...they chase each other...not other fish.
sry...off topic but as far as the fin nipping...

Yes, we only have one serpae. We have three white skirts, but they've either ostracized him or he doesn't feel like he's one of them. He pretty much hangs out by himself. I think I may have relayed this story when I first posted here: The serpae was "rescued". My in-laws are into fish. They have a large koi pond with a couple fish over 5 pounds. They used to have a 40-gallon aquarium inside too, but it was lost in a fire. After they moved, they downsized to a 10-gallon but got bored with it and bought a 90-gallon, which now houses a couple of oscars. For several months, the 10-gallon tank sat empty with a filter running and no aeration. The water eventually turned the color of sun tea and with about 4" of water left in the tank, my mother-in-law decided she wanted it gone. So my wife set about to clean it up and bring it home so we could use it. And that's when she found the fish my kids call "Toxic Waste Dump". Yeah, he'd been in there for MONTHS, with no feeding, no aeration, and water quality that might not have been livable for e.coli bacteria. But he was alive and well. I'm not sure he can be killed. He lived in our 10-gallon for a few months with platies until we upgraded to our current 55g. He's just a loner, he probably always will be.

Wow. It's amazing that your serpae tetra survived that! He must be one hardy fish!
