I have 3 male guppies in a 5 1/2 gallon which seem very skittish. This week my mom was vaccuming the carpet which I rarely see her do when I am home. I looked at the 5 1/2 gallon by my bed and at my slightest movement, the fish panicked. They were paling in coloration and swimming in place very scared. Their tank is on a night stand 2 feet off the floor. When my mom turned off the vaccum cleaner they seemed calm down a bit. But when it went on again in another room, they began to stress again. I put a towel over them to make it dark to ease their stress. None of my other fished seemed to panic/get scared when the vaccum cleaner was turned on including my female bettas who have their tank right on the carpet basically. My goldfish didn't seem to mind and begged for food as usual. The other guppies I am not sure of. My female guppies were in a school together swimming in place at the time but I am not sure if they were scared or just resting. And I didn't notice anything different with my guppy fry or old male guppy alone in another tank. Luckily my 3 males have calmed down and are fine now. That aside, has anyone else had a fish terrified of the sound of vaccum cleaners? This is not a concern (more like a question) really since the fish recover and the vaccum is never on that long. Except maybe if someone has an idea about how to lessen that stress on them while it is on. Thanks! Renee

sound travels very efficiently through water. would be very loud for them. my suggestion to get them unafraid of the sound is to turn the vacuum on more often. they will become less concerned with the sound or maybe turn the vacuum on at feeding time. i guarentee after a few days they will hear the vacuum and come out begging for food...
