Interesting piece of information...I submitted some pictures to someone a whole lot more knowlegeable than me on Malagasy cichlids. Seems these fish might just not be all that common. I will be giving this set of 8 to him at the end of them month. Makes me feel better than ever about getting them in the first place.
So, I'll have sent 8 uncommon Paratilapia to a knowledgeable hobbyist, get my tank back for something else, and get a chance to pick up a few more...if I want. I don't know if I actually want any of these for myself...but I'm going to do a little reading on them and make that decision after these go to their new home.

This really validates what you have done for these fish! Carl

Well, hmmm...having some difficulties with these fish.
I had a pair form. They beat the heck out of their tank mates before I got them isolated. One fish in particular was really in bad shape. I didn't realize how bad, and left it in the main tank.
Now I'm absolutely amazed this fish has survived. Most of the tail fin is missing, the scales are gone, down to the flesh in places. There seems to be no fungus, or any sort of infection.
I've moved this fish into a 27 gallon tank (all I had empty and available at the time). I'm treating with MB baths, Melafix and marine salt, and daily 50% water changes.
Would it help at all to step my baths up to twice a day? I can't believe this fish is still alive, and I'll try to get pictures to show just how bad the damage is. I feel like an idiot for not catching this sooner, but I'm doing what I can now.

Yes, I often/usually perform two baths per day in moderate to severe problems. You could also combine Pimafix with the Melafix as this organic has more gram positive attributes than Melafix. Triple Sulfa can also be effective in treating injuries. Carl

Can I use Triple Sulfa with Melafix and Pimafix? I'm concerned with too much medication.

Barb, I've had an Arowana end up losing his entire tail before and had it grow back in 10 days, using Carl's treatment regimine. I have a feeling things will work out well for you.

Barbara, sorry if I was confusing; Pimafix and Melafix compliment each other well (in part because Melafix is primarily gram positive, while Pimafix is primarily gram negative). However Triple Sulfa would be used instead of the previously mentioned organic treatments. Triple Sulfa is a step up in treatment from the previous, yet is still is an antimicrobial (Triple Sulfa is not a true antibiotic) that is quite safe with few side effects. Kanaplex with Nitrofurazone (or even Erythromycin) would be a further step up, but with increasing side effects. Jon; Thank you Carl

Thanks for the clarification, Carl. I appreciate it.
Since the fish is not showing any signs of infection, I think I'll stick with the Melafix and Pimafix route, with MB baths, twice a day. I've been catching him in a container, not a net, as to not stress his wounds. I would rather not go heavier on the medications unless there is a need for it, and trust me, I'm watching this fish closely. He's in a tank in my bedroom now, easier for me to keep a good eye on him. I'm trying to tempt him with food, but right now he shows little interest in food. I'm trying to keep the tank immaculate for him...I think that's the best route for now.

Anytime Carl, because it is true. Not only just the Arowana regenerating an entire tail in less then 2 weeks, Columnaris really hardly ever shows up anymore. You picked a great med to stablize and help the fish and changing up the cleaning routine has done a great bit help there too. You're advice has always worked well for me and is why I call you when I need to check out something or see what you think. I feel like an a$$ though that I still haven't gotten that UV up and going, but I am no liar, I very well will do it at some point.
