It has been several months and I mean a long time that my goldfish Oranda's eyes have not been lookiing right. For ages, she had cloudy eyes (I know I have shown pictures of her and no one here has thought anything was wrong). She has also has problems seeing for months. She is in a 10 gallon with 1 other goldfish that has trouble eating sometimes (trouble getting food into its mouth). But due to the impaired vision, Oranda cannot see the food and the other one gets most of it. As a result, Oranda looks very thin right now. I have tried increasing feediing to twice a day but Oranda just searches frantically to find the food but keeps missing it.
I noticed a about a week ago that one of the veins on Oranda's tail fin was reddish. I figured it would go away but today, more of her tail fin has reddish veins (no too severe though). I looked at her and I noticed her both eyes protruding slightly. The other fish in there, Puon has none of these symtoms and neither do any of the fish that were in with Oranda before. Oranda is very active and goes nuts like the rest of my goldfish whenever I put in food(is very healthy acting otherwise). Due to how slowly this has progressed, I'm thinking maybe it is malnutrition but I am not sure. If it is pop-eye, it has progressed over a series of at least 5 months very slowly and infected no other fish. What does it sound like it is? And if it is pop-eye or some other disease, what should I use to treat it? I have a lot of meds I ordered from Carl on hand. In the meantime I will do everything I can to make sure Oranda doesn't keep missing the food and gains weight.
Thank you.
Renee

Just so you guys know from when a lot of my goldfish were skinny from underfeeding, most of them are normal weight now that I need them more twice a day so it is basically just Oranda. I fed my Oranda and Puon tonight and made sure Oranda got plenty in case this is a result of thinness.
I also wanted to you to know I keep my tank clean just to help to determine the cause of this if it is popeye. I do 25% water changes every week and keep up on maintance so nitrates are probably low. The tank has also been set up for 3 years and never reads high on ammonia or nitrites. I have also had Oranda 3 years and she has never been sick before. Just adding on to what I posted earlier.
Thanks!

well first off.....i can almost guarentee it isnt popeye. i have never heard of a case of popeye taking 5 months. if she is malnourished, i would say her "skin" getting smaller could make her eyes look bigger. what i would recomend, at feeding time, get her to one side of the tank and put some kind of make shift divider up and feed her solo. the first few feedings will panic all the fish, so make the feedings a lil less for a week or so, but i promise, they will get used to it.

Renee, You might also want to try putting feeding rings in your tank if you are using floating food. If you put one on either side of the tank then pretty quickly the fish will learn that food is always located in those two spots and that might make it easier for Oranda to find the food and eat more consistently. I had to put a feeding ring in my 10g because now there is so much flow in the tank that the food was being whisked around and sucked into the skimmer before anyone could get a chance to eat it. The feeding ring only cost under $3 at Petsmart. It also really helps keep the tank cleaner. For some reason I couldn't find this at Petsmart's site even though I know that's where I bought mine, but here's a link to the exact same product at Petco. It's really simple to use, you just suction cup it to the glass, my fish figured it out in only a day and now now they go straight to it to be fed. I hope that's helpful. www.petco.com/product/10900/NutraFin-Max-Feeding-Ring.aspxP.S. It got a couple of not so great reviews but I really don't get that, it has worked wonderfully for me.

Thanks guys. I made sure that Oranda got some food this morning. I figured out that the key is Puon cannot eat larger flakes of food like normal goldfish can (related to the eating problem) but Oranda can so not breaking up the flakes/pellets into smaller pieces as much for Puon will slow Puon down eating and give Oranda a chance. I will be observing Oranda every time they eat and use the divider if Oranda starts to not get enough again.
Kagome, I have to sink the food because otherwise the fish have buoyancy problems. Would a feeding ring still work for food that has to be soaked and sinks? I also have a container in there that I put food in and I have trained the fish that is where the food is. The only problem is only Puon eats from there. Oranda doesn't notice and looks for food franticially in the gravel for food that falls.
Oranda also looks like she has a something over her eyes or something that is making her clear part of her eye stick out. The actual eye isn't protruding, it looks like the outside of her eye is cloudy and there is a thick clear membrane on top of her eye, maybe fluid build-up. I am also very worried about her bloodshot tail fins too. It appears that the orginal part at the top of her tail fin that had some red veins is healing but the lower part of her tail has it pretty bad. She does not appear sick otherwise.
I cannot get pictures now (broken battery charger) but I plan on borrowing my neighbor's camera again.
Is eye getting like this and bloodshot fins a sign of malnurishment? I am sure that the eyes looking large isn't from her body looking thin in comparison. She is not super, super skinny, she looks moderately underweight but she looks little better now that she has plenty of food since last night.
Thanks again!
Renee

Oops, sorry. A feeding ring will only work for floating food.

I'd have to agree with that it is not pop eye, When my tetra's got it, they got it in One day! well maybe two, first day may look a little cloudy then the next day they were popped! no doubt of it being pop eye, And I have to say although I treated them right away, they still ended up being blind in one eye, At least i think they are blind, their pupils are very tiny, And doesn't change... they act like they can't see the food unless it falls from the other side.
