good afternoon all. well.....timing i guess is everything....especially in this case. I bought a battery powered air pump last week. it plugs in and in case of powerfailure it turns on. well....i finally got around to buying batteries for it yesterday. low and behold, i blew a fuse in the basement where my fish are. i have no idea how long it was gone for, but if it were any more than a few hours, all my fish would have surely perished. this pump worked great in keeping the tank oxygenated. I am sure there are many brands of this....but mine is called "Silent air B-11" and made by a company called PENN PLAX. I recommend everyone buying one as it also doubles as a portable unit for transporting fish. www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp18280/si1382133/cl0/pennplaxsilentairb11batteryoperatedairpumpbtw, I paid 25$ but the online price is half that.

not an angel fan....but i do love that lil ram. to me even gold rams which are quite plain in comparison with the others are still nicer to look at than 99% of fish IMO

what i have done in a pinch is cut paint sticks to size.then that bought me time to get glass supports cut. most glass places have off cuts that are nearly free....and if ya wink and smile sometimes they`ll cut it for you too....

in fact , it may not be food at all. could be a stomach bug....ie parasite that is not allowing for proper digestion of food.

I agree with the buffer....but adding a buffer will help the levels....but it is only a band-aid. more importantly I feel we need to figure out the problem. as for a bad or mis-used test kit, that is possible. IMO, the best way to prove it is to take a water sample to a reputable fish dealer and ask them to test all things you test for. if both numbers are close, it isn`t the kit. also, a battery powered syphon isn`t cheap and usually quite un neccessary. alot of suction happens when a syphon is started. maybe a smaller hose on the vaccuum. that will give you more time to thouroughly vaccuum.

glad you found him a new home. you are making the right decision about the dempsies. you know why it is called a jack dempsy don`t ya? anyways....you would also need a way larger tank. congrats on the new adopted home. try to find a rubber pleco. they are one of my favs. almost resembles a horseshoe crab if ya use your imagination....and they stay small.

plecos are nocternal by nature. they become alot more active after lights out. most plecos have no trouble growing so that says that they get enough food whether suplimented or not. be aware tho...they are vegetarians but they will eat animal matter such as brine shrimp or bloodworms, but they do have a tough time digesting this food. also they have been known to eat slime coat off of other fish which can cause alot of problems to the host fish...

Carl is right....we as people learn from a young age to not swallow toothpaste.....but inevitably we do. in small quantities it is fairly harmless.....just hafta brush your teeth elsewhere....and avoid vinegar cleaning....
