I wish I could zoom just a little more to see if this is possibly Saprolegnia. However from what I can see, I agree with others as to Columnaris. As well the tank appears to be clean (as a very dirty tank is often more indicative of Columnaris or even Aeromonas or Pseudomonas). Stress is a major contributor to a columnaris infection and his purchase from a crowded tank may have been a trigger. Albeit for a fish this size a medicated bath is difficult, however I have done so using a 5 gallon bucket, so if this person is willing to attempt this using MB it may help Knowing water parameters is essential to attempting a cure as well (this includes KH, GH, pH). As suggested, salt is a good start, at 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons to 1 teaspoon per 1 gallon. Other minerals are important to Columnaris infection as well, especially Calcium (hence the GH test). In tank treatment of Kanamycin and/or Nitrofurazone. I would recommend this link as well: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Columnaris.htmlwww.americanaquariumproducts.com/AquariumKH.htmlCarl

I passed that along and again today stressed getting Kanaplex and Furan II going asap. He put up more and better shots and the progress of this disease is much worse then we saw before. I also suggested it would be beneficial if he could isolate and bath with Meth Blue, but first and foremost to get the Kanaplex and Furan II running asap. answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090105144811AA80lOL

Jon, if you post the above links in the thread, as maybe others reading or maybe others giving advice there may check out the information and even find there way here. His question about Melafix is a no, as Melafix is basically antiseptic in its use and has not real anti-bacterial action against Columnaris. Water parameters are a must as well, especially since he may have other issues going on after looking at the new pics. This would including Calcium in his water (which is why the link to the Calcium article). You might provide a link to the Medications article as well, especially so he can better understand what Melafix can and cannot do. Even more importantly so that he does not use the terrible advice to use Maracyn (Erythromycin) which in the Columnaris article I specifically recommend against. The other advise about the goldfish is totally off subject and has little bearing in a potential Columnaris infection, especially since this infection is an aerobic bacterium (if this were an Aeromonas infection, this might be a little more relevant) americanaquariumproducts.com/Aquarium_Medication.htmlFinally the comment about the HITH infection may not be too far off base, so this should also be addressed. www.aquarium-pond-answers.com/2008/02/hole-in-head.htmlBTW, I posted the urls in their "raw" form rather than encoding them in this forums more user friendly format: [ url= URL ]Name of article[ /url ] I hope this helps

He's been mailing me direct now and I've pointed him to get the Kanaplex and Furan II, and to start running that ASAP. I have a strong feeling the other advice on the Melafix and Maracyn have been weeding out of possiblities listening to what he's got to say privately. He jsut doesn't have much money so I'm putting priority for the time being, to get the Kanaplex and Furan II running asap at least. I'm pushing for a 5-7 day running of it.
