Hi, I’m Tara and I have a 7 year old 30 gallon Freshwater tank. It has Scissortail Rasboras, a 6 year old Bristlenose, 2 Panda Cory cats, 1 Sterba Cory and what was supposed to be a Sterba, is really a Three Striped Cory. I used to have live plants, but reality is I don’t have a green thumb, so silky and soft plants with smooth gravel, an acrylic tree stump, that my Bristle turned into his hiding space and driftwood it became. I have Seachum 55 Tidal filter with two air bubblers (one a volcano and the other 4” stone). I do water changes every 1-2 weeks and feed my fish every other day with live blood worms, Omega One bottom feeders sinking pellets or half a cube frozen brine shrimp. I did feed, until recently, Hikari mini algae wafers, but this is where my education begins:
3 weeks ago, I had an outbreak of algae, I thought I was being responsible with quantity and cleaning my gravel, decor and plants, but I was wrong and now my tank is paying the price. I lost two Scissortails, down now to one, my Bristlenose started to have a white body to the beginning of his tail, one of my Pandas and the Sterba got white fuzzy noses, while the other two Cory’s were fine. I was first told to use Pimafix and Melafix, after the treatment, the white noses weren’t fuzzy anymore, they were smooth and molded to the noses. The other Panda started to get a partial white nose. My Three Striped had a white patch on its tail and my Bristle got whiter, a thick mucus formed on the back where the dorsal touches to the beginning of its tail. I then used Junngle Fungus Cure, that took away the white patch on Three Striped’s tail, all the white noses shrank, but my Bristle got worse, now he got white on his head and a white patch on his tail. The Rasbora started to swim with a twitch. I was afraid to do another treatment with Jungle, so I read somewhere while doing research, to put the fish in total darkness. I unplugged the tank light and made sure the room that the tank was in stayed dark. It killed all the algae, but I noticed 2 small white patches on the back glass and one piece of driftwood. All the glass have this slime that no matter what I do, it won’t come off. My Bristle would go back to his normal color and the white covering looked see through. I then added API stress coat( half a dose) with half a capful Prime and Stability and that made every one feel better. The white noses got smaller and Bristle’s thick mucus shrunk even more and I don’t know which pair did it, but there were Cory eggs on my front and left side glass. However, I noticed the Bristlenose had a white patch under it’s neck, the smaller Panda had a white patch on it’s underbelly and my Rasbora has a small white patch on top of it’s head. Both Pandas have a red ulcer or leison on the side of it’s neck. They all are eating, swimming fine, I still have them in darkness and it seems to be making my Bristle less white and more his natural color, he still has the white, but it’s not getting worse.
My PH is 7.6, temperature is 78, GH 180, KH 40, Ammonia is 0, Nitrites is 0 and Nitrates is 10.
What can I do to save my fish, I take full responsibility for this, and I need to figure out what they have to cure them.
