Well, I changed my 90 gallon over to sand. Well, it is actually argonite that looks like sand. I washed it but it still caused me a panic because when I put it in the tank it was totally milky. I did this on Friday here is a milky pic and pics from today. Yesterday I did a water change and rinsed my filters. I really love the look of sand it really makes a difference to a tank. Before... After

Looks really sharp Brenda I used aragonite a lot in my marine set ups, with proper care it can be helpful with nitrate control as well. Carl

Wow, Brenda, that turned out really really nice!!! What kinds of rocks are those? Carl, if it helps control nitrate, does that wear out after a period of time, or is it something else? I'd be very interested in trying this in a tank at college...

I'd be very interested in trying this in a tank at college... The rocks appear to be "waterfall rock", at least that is what they were called at the local rock quarrey where we picked them up for our business. The fine sand does not necessarily "wear out" but it must be maintained so as to not allow sulfide reduction. Arogonite sand is not a good idea for low pH preferring fish since it will tend to buffer the water higher (although high DOC can negate this). The other problem with maintenance is that detritus can easily colloect on the surface with poor or low maintenance (which I know Brenda gives her tanks A-1 Care!) See these articles for more about sand and nitrates: Hydrogen Sulfide production in anaerobic De-Nitrification for Aquarium/Pond Nitrate RemovalAquarium NitratesCarl

Thanks again guys!!! I love the look of sand. It was a pain thought to change over...A LOT of work, but I think well worth it for the turnout. I too hope I am able to keep it looking this good...I'm sure it'll take some practice learning to take care of it but I think I am ready for it.

Yes it does look VERY nice, so I hope you do not take my answer to Clint's question as criticism, i just wanted to point out what is/may be involved Carl

oooh, I was just taking another peek, and I noticed sand on top of your rocks... is that your touch, or just settling from the milkiness?
whatever it is, I love it!
