Greetings,
For a few months now, Aeromonas (I think) seems to have been introduced in 2 of my tanks (50gal growout and 125gal community). I'm a small scale angelfish breeder (3 to 4 spawns per year while I'm at college), and proper quarantine wasn't a thing I was giving much attention in the past. I suspect the problem came from a few silver angelfish that were introduced earlier in the year - when I wasn't knowledgeable about diseases in general. Looking back at pictures, those fish clearly had serious cases of hemorrhagic septicemia in April, but at the time, I couldn't even realize anything was wrong - they were frequently breeding, eating well, and didn't show any particular signs of stress.
I started suspecting something when 2 new angelfish from a trusted source started developing Popeyes in June/July, a few weeks after being added. Going through different forums/treatment page, I fell upon Aeromonas as a possible cause - which is when I realized from pictures that Hemorrhagic septicemia was highly advanced in the silvers added earlier in the year, and was now visible in the ones affected by Popeye.
The previous silvers are not with me anymore - they were given away before realizing any problem was present. The 2 that both had Popeye and HS are now in a 10gal hospital tank, to which 3 more were added due to developing HS. In both tanks (50 gal and 125gal), only the angels seem to be affected - the 50 gal also contains Platies and Columbian Tetras, the 125 gal Geophagus abalios, L128 Blue Phantoms, and a pair of Mesonauta sp. - I had 2 Mesonauta sp. females in the past, but one died after refusing any type of food for numerous weeks. The one female left normally eats well, but sometimes has loose or white feces. I have about 30 juvenile angels separated in both tanks that still seem unaffected.
Here are the water parameters for the 125gal (50 gal being similar):
NO3: 10
NO2: 0
NH4: 0
PH: 6.9
KH: 6 KH
GH: 6 GH
Feeding regimen is 3 times per day with a Northfin pellet mix. Morning feeding is mixed with VitaChem, Seachem Nourish and GarlicGuard.
Water change regimen normally is 40% water changer every day (or every other day if tight on time). In the past this was only the case for the 65gal I use for breeding, but is now done for those 2 tanks too, as they had 2 water changes per week before. This change seems to have been beneficial to both stress and general behavior. All filters were thoroughly ''washed'' to get rid of sludge or muck (without breaking the cycle of course).
Being in Canada, access to good medication is a bit harder. I had Metroplex left from before meds were taken out from stores. I got Kanaplex from Ebay this summer as a first try, which was mixed with food and was given for 7 days every morning to everyone (treatment was finished last week). This was taken well - although my female Mesonauta decided to stop eating entirely after trying it the first time. The HS in the fish in the hospital tank were improving, but seem to be coming back since the treatment ended 4 days ago.
During this time, I ordered both Focus and Neoplex to add to what I had in stock. Focus arrived, still waiting on Neoplex. AAP Furacyn sadly isn't an option.
My available meds will therefore be those:
Kanaplex
Metoplex
Neoplex
Focus (as a binder)
I've seen different combinations being possibilities from the AAP website.
Sadly, treating the water is not an option due to the amount of meds available, all treatments must therefore be done through food. Everyone but the female Mesonauta eat well, so this seems like a good option anyway.
What would you recommend I mix together, for how long and in how much time (knowing a Kanamycin treatment was just done), as a last try? After this I sadly won't have anything left to try.
Thank you!
