I've updated this popular article once more:
www.americanaquariumproducts.com/AquariumMedication2.html
Here is an excerpt:
"I personally have found Kanamycin to be one of the more effective antibiotics available for some common fish fin bacterial issues & more (similar properties to Chloramphenicol).
HOWEVER Kanamycin is still not as effective as Chloramphenicol which it replaced in the fish keeping industry years ago (Chloramphenicol is no longer available in the aquarium trade).
This is the unfortunate part of the popular use of Kanamycin, in particular under the trade name "Kanaplex" as its predecessor Chloramphenicol was more wide spectrum, and more effective for diseases such as Columnaris. Kanamycin often by itself is not enough, so many will mistakenly purchase Kanamycin (Kanaplex) for their Bettas in particular and the treatment will often fail without the synergistic combination of Nitrofurazone or for other issues, combined with Metronidazole.
As noted earlier, Kanamycin can be blended with other medications in particular pharmaceutical grade Nitrofurazone to make a synergistic wide spectrum treatment.
Best is an already blended medication so that both are treated at the same time for maximum synergistic benefit as is found in AAP Spectrogram especially for difficult cases of Aeromonas or Columnaris.
Kanamycin can also be purchased separately and combined with Nitrofurazone such as in the only pharmaceutical grade product "AAP Furacyn" (as well as the much less effective non pharmaceutical grade Furan 2).
If combined with Furan 2, it is not quite as effective since these have different treatment schedules due to the fact Furan 2 is not very pure & requires daily treating unlike Kanaplex or Furacn. This does not allow for maximum synergistic effect and also separate combination treatment allows for the negative affects of high pH upon Nitrofurazone that the use of AAP Spectrogram over comes. "
