I did a water change on my 40 gallon yesterday and rewarded the fish for it with a little spirulina flakes. I was about to draw my hand out when a goldfish nibbled on me so hard, it almost made me jump. :oAt first I thought I had accidently hit the fish's mouth while it was trying to nibble at my fingher but in a few seconds it happened again! It was hilarious. The goldfish that did that is Salyme who has rapidly grown to 4 inches now in the 40. I know it is probably not safe to feed piranhas but what about 6 or more inch goldfish once they grow more in the 40? It was a very funny experience. ;D
Anyway, sorry if this was off topic, just had to share it and ask that question.

I had a nippy nine inch long Gold Severum, if you put your hand anywhere near his cave he would lunge out and bite the you know what out of you! These kinds of fish don't have sharp teeth so although they can pinch hard enough to hurt at times it's not going to actually injure you at all. It will just startle the heck out of you when you're not expecting it.

Yeah. it's pretty funny. I first discovering goldfish nibbling on human fingers to say "feed me" when my mom was siphoning out a 10 gallon back when I was 12 years old and she said the goldfish in there was nibbling on her arm. lol
Have I meationed that my fish also like it when I dance around their tank. As long as I make a gesture with my fingers that resembles what my finger look like when I feed them, they start pacing the tank and following me around begging for food. It is adorable. XDD
Thanks for the reply by the way Kagome.

As kagome noted goldfish cannot really cause much "damage" or many other fish.
I have had larger Oscars draw blood, and had an arowana grab hard enough that I jerked my han WITH the arowana still attached (since they have hooked teeth similar to a snake).
But the worse fish were the Saltwater Moray Eels that me and my employees would have to service the tank with one hand and a keep a stick or similar with the other as these guys would slash you open in no time flat.
I have also been stung by Lionfish and Foxface on a few occasions and with their neurotoxin, it was always a "fun" experience.

Wow. It sounds like you've gotten quite a few injuries from fish. I once fed wild fish from my hands and within a few days they were following me around the dock in the lake waiting to be served. lol I fed them by hand and they were quick and engulfed my whole finger in their mouthes. They never did any damage though. I think they missed after I left though that I am not there to feed them. XD

i as well have been bitten by arrowanas on several occasions and have always had a good amount of blood "leaking from my hand". don`t any of you kid yourselves into thinking they are slow docile creatures judging by their normal movements. i have yet to meet anyone that has been able to pull away quickly enough.
as to toxic fish i have been fortunate. never poisoned, althou a porcupine puffer from a client loved to give me love bites. glad i kept him well fed....because they are capable from jaw strength alone of taking off a finger. also cared 4 3 large motoro rays that i had trained to hand feed. they`d see me and flip upside down so i could rub their bellies and give them a treat of salmon or shrimp. they are incredibly docile and intelligent creatures.

I envy you on the rays Bill - I have actually petted an ocean sunfish in the wild - only after fear of it being a shark was over - huge dorsal fin!
