I believe my betta has dropsy (swollen abdomen for a 7 days now and just recently starting to show signs of pinecone scales). I had originally suspected constipation due to lack of any other symptoms beyond swollen abdomen and as such fasted him for 2 days after feeding a small bit of peas. He still had a great appetite and activity at that time and I reduced his food as recommended.
It was only 4 days ago when he started showing signs of pineconing that I realized I had been horribly mistaken. I have been treating with API Melafix and Pimafix for 4 days now, but he's only getting worse in terms of lethargy and seemingly gasping for air that started yesterday. He also stopped eating yesterday. I did a 25% water change today before redosing melafix and pimafix. He seems to have perked up just a little after that, but I know from reading around that the melafix and pimafix aren't going to get him through this.
I found the AAP page and ordered the Spectrogram since it had the kanamycin I knew I needed blended with nitrofurazone and the article said it was a great synergistic medication. Further reading of the posted Dropsy article though only mentioned Kanaplex for Dropsy.
I just want to know if ordering the spectrogram was the wrong choice and if I should try to switch it out for kanaplex instead.
Thank you so much for any advice or help with this.

I would start with Spectrogram. It has a broader spectrum of antibiotics. I would also try to find the cause, since dropsy can be caused from a few different reasons as stated in the article.
