My apologies for posting maybe unrelated post, but it looks only recent and active topic on all boards. I am trying to build UVC air treatment unit by myself and it looks that you have the best hands-on knowledge about UV products. I will greatly appreciate help with matching high UVC output bulbs with proper ballast.

I'm not sure how this design will work without exposing yourself to to much UVC. A UV sterilizer for an aquarium has the lamp inclosed for protection reason. How would you protect your eyes?
A 55 Watt lamp is also very long. It could be difficult to carry around.

I know all about UV exposure to human and been using commercial medical version of UV based air cleaner for years only and only after work ours without anyone present while it working. Unfortunately unit broke down and i decided to built one by myself. UV lamps are different from fluorescent, that's why i am seeking help here. My only challenge is finding right ballast that will work with particular UVC bulb. Reason for selecting 36" t8 bulb is to easy build by reusing standard t8 strip with ballast replacement. Unit will be powered on/off by remote wifi outlet when room is empty.

The only difference is that a high output UVC lamp requires a higher surge voltage to start, otherwise there is no difference between a 36 watt UVC and standard fluorescent lamp.
Generally magnetic ballast with a starter work better, but unfortunately Obama outlawed these in 2014 and even thought this regulation was lifted a couple years ago, most companies moved on. So you are stauck with mostly Chinese made electronic ballasts and often it is trial and error if these will work

Hi, not to highjack the threat; its still relevant though:
I'm using a small 4w UV-c light for a project, and searching for a ballast, google lead me here. I can find ballasts that specific state "electronic ballast for uv lamp". But from what you write here Carl, is there a difference in a ballast for a UV light or fluorescent light at low wattage? is it all marketing or not relevant at low wattages?

No other than a HO UV lamp requires a higher surge voltage than the average fluorescent lamp
