When I went to check the temperature in my 10g tank a few minutes ago I noticed that all of a sudden there is an oil slick on the surface of the water. What should I do?

Often this is just caused from bio decomposition of protein based organic matter. Sometimes this is from oily hands or other outside sources. Either way I would not be too overly concerned although this can adversely affect the exchange of oxygen at the surface. I would recommend carefully floating paper towels on the surface to absorb the oils. You can also perform water changes via skimming with a cup to remove this. Some HOB filters such as the Via Aqua M200 have surface skimmers that can prevent this problem as well (not to be confused with a Marine Protein Skimmer). Carl
