Dear Community,
I would like to seek guidance regarding my current situation. I have a 6 month old half-moon betta that I've recently received after a delayed shipment and has moderate to sever fin rot/damage because of it. He is setup solo in a 30 gal tank with 1.25" black sand, drift wood and a bubbler. Tank has been in operation for 2 weeks. Temperature is set at 76. Filter is an Aquaclear 50 set on the lowest flow setting. GH is ~170ppm, KH is ~80ppm, pH is ~7. Ammonia is 0-0.5. Nitrates and Nitrites are 0.
I have been using SeaChem Prime as a water conditioner with 20% water changes every other day and Stability daily for a week and a half.
This past week we completed a course of combined Kanaplex and Focus antibiotic therapy in the hopes of addressing any gram negative pathogens that might be contributing to his fin deterioration.
Prior to antibiotic treatment no signs were noted beyond fin splitting/blunting/fraying and a decreased energy level. There was no evidence of red streaking, sores, white fuzz or external parasites. There is some black at some fin tips but I'm uncertain as to the significance of this as pictures sent prior to shipment show a black "trim" to his normal fin coloration.
Since antibiotic treatment overall I have seen a significant improvement in attitude and appetite. His fins seem to have stabilized but do not show evidence of regrowth. We currently feed primarily frozen brine shrimp once daily (what he will eat in about 5 min).
I am contemplating next steps for him. I do not know if I'm being impatient with looking for fin regrowth. I have heard some people note new fin (clear) quickly in the course of a week and have noted none in him. I'm wondering if a methylene blue bath would be a good thought for him to enhance oxygenation to his distill tail tips and help with presumed ammonia burn. I also should have both medicated and regular wonder shells arriving today that can supplement my options. I hope to pick up some decent Spiralina at my LPS too.
In conjunction I have a 4 state move coming at the end of the week. I hope to not let this set back his process of healing too much. I was thinking of transporting him in an insulated container with a sponge filter and a medicated wonder shell chip, along with plenty of StressGuard.
Any recommendations regarding further fin rot care and moving a weakened fish would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much for your time.
Sincerely,
Jenny and The Fishy
