Do you have a hospital/QT tank to keep it in? I'd do that and add Stress Guard to the hospital tank water, or to the main tank if you don't have a QT tank.
Right now the biggest danger is infection of the open wound, followed by further damage from not being able to run away as good. I'm guessing it was a bit of a tussle with another one that caused the damage.

Great news. None of those meds I can get locally except for the stressguard. I will do my best with this. Do you suggest that I finish snipping off the rest of the tail? How much time between the swabbing and the bath?

How much time between the swabbing and the bath? I would not snip unless the infection is growing rapidly while the swab and bath do not help. The bath is always followed immediately by the bath Carl

ok. injury update. been doing dips for two days. put him in a hospital tank with 35% water changes daily with stressguard. seems like the fin that was hanging is now fallen off. seems to be healing or at least no bacteria growth. discus seems a little stressed with his bars showing but alright . im a little concerned cause i havent seen him eat for two days. might switch to blood worms to see if he bites. moving him for tank to dip is a little challenging and stressful but manageable. seems like im more worried about that than anything else.

You could also try some garlic soaked food. None for stimulating appetite. Just try to keep it/you as claim as possible during the dip.

i have garlic on hand. havent used it in awhile. thks for reminding me. its just hard to get them to eat again if they are not well. im sure the stress factor plays a part. it also looks like he is gong to loose the whole tailfin. starting to notice that the remaining tail is starting to degrade like dead flesh. had a little bacteria this evening, not much though but the dip took care of it. i guess ill start calling him Stubs

ok guys; day 4. A little more fin came off. Physically "Stubs" looks good. swims good, good color and apparently healing well. My only concern is; is that he is not eating. tried garlic and just today bloodworms. Is there an article I can brush up on to calm my nerves? lol I mean when should i really be concerned when I have 6 more days of hospital and dip left? It looks like its gonna take a couple of more days for the fin to fall off. I read somewhere that they can go two weeks without food.

This actually looks like there might be a deep infection eating into muscle tissue.
I would swab with MB, which still may not be strong enough, which a diluted potassium permanganate swab would then be called for.
With MB, the infected area will take on the blue color of the MB

i noticed that after every dip. I assumed that it was the result of his fin coming off and healing. I dont recall it looking like that the day after a dip. Only right after one

Looks like he got chomped pretty solid. I do like the new name, though. Same way any of my fish get named - after living through something bad.

Only right after one Have you performed a swab prior to the dip? Since you have him in a quarantine tank (if I understand correctly), the swab would be more important for this type of infection. Then a treatment in the bare quarantine tank might be more easy on the fish using Furan 2 & Kanamycin along with StressGuard Carl

well i have been using a dip containing salt MB furnan 2 and kanaplex. then i move him into the hospital tank with fresh water and stressguard administred daily. i also do a 35% water change while hes dipping. should i be using the kanaplex and furnan 2 in the hospital water instead? i have him in a 75 gal. tank with 40 gal. of water. that redness you see stays there for a few hrs but by time the morning comes its hardly noticable if at all. FYI i dont use a whole packet of furnan since im only dipping him in 5 gallons. i have been halfing the dosage. ito be precise i use 4 tsp salt 80 drops of MB kanaplex as directed and half a packet of furnan. sorry i must have misunderstood

I reread the bath ingredients and have decided to stay with salt and MB only. The furnan2, kanaplex and stress guard for the hospital. I suppose I'll follow the directions more closely on the box of furnan and kanaplex and just do water changes then. Gotta pay more attention to the reading comprehension.
