Sorry for the problems! I think the problem started by mixing methods of aquarium cycling. Likely the seasoned filter was no longer seasoned as you noted, and with non seasoned cycling methods such as the pure ammonia or liquified fish food, I do not add plants until the tank is fully cycled At this point (unless you have a time machine , lol), I would trim and remove all dying plant material and continue on the path you following, this includes leaving the UV Sterilizer off until cycled Carl

Yes, the bacteria cannot last that long with water going through the sponge feeding the bacteria....
Stability and fish food are great. With that study we did, Stability preformed the best.
That water is better!
The plants are not hurting anything. If they have no roots, you can float them or glue/tie them to something. They will need time.

Devon, do you mean the larvae bacteria cannot last that long with water going through the sponge feeding the other bacteria? Are you saying don't worry about the larvae?
Also the water smells kinda funky. How often would you suggest 25% water changes and filter rinsing during the nitrogen cycle? Is once per week not enough?
Thanks very much!

Ingrid A water change can be performed as long as there is some ammonia present. You can also add fresh carbon to control the smell Resource: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/NiroxProducts.html#carbonCarl
