Just a funny for you folks....
October 15, I bought an 8 line redtail rainbow on my way home from Columbus, OH. I could tell the fish was constipated when I bought him (the store held him for me, so I felt I had to buy him)....I intended to take him back to another store in the chain if I didn't see him "poop" with in the 14 day guarantee period. The fish has gorgeous color - is very active - has a good appetite -- and FINALLY started to "poop" this week.
Monday, he had a long poop trail....and has normal poop trails every day since. He is no longer swollen around his vent.
I called the store to tell them the good news. The associate I spoke with asked me what I did. I just made sure he got a good diet of Spirulina (via frozen foods and Cobalt -- which also has Probiotics) - and less frozen bloodworms (this chain gives rainbows a heavy diet of bloodworms - which is not always a good thing). She told me next time to give him a frozen pea (grin). I told her there is no way a rainbow is going to eat a frozen pea. I will stick with Spirulina with probiotics.
And how did I know the fish -- all of my fish - need more spirulina? Well, I read that on Carl's AAP site, too (read that a long time ago -- and have reread the pages frequently).
No... I don't check my fish all the time to see if they are "pooping" normally.... I just kept my eye on this guy.
I did have a laugh-out-loud moment though when I spotted a VERY long poop trail from one of my clown plecos (the poop trail had to be five or six inches long). He had been eating too much "junk" food off the aquarium glass. Anytime I use Kordon Fish Protector, that product also tends to slime coat the glass making "stuff" stick to it. sorry - no photographs for you (smile).
Cheers,
Judy

I'd bet you money that your rainbows WILL eat frozen peas. If you shell them in warm water and crush the pulp, any fish will eat it.
I used to have livebearers with all kinds of GI issues. I switched to a spirulina-based food (ZooMed Spiraling 20) at Carl's recommendation and haven't ever had a problem since.

Thanks Parker,
Yes, but with 20 fish in the tank, it will be hard to tell if the rainbow actually eats some of the peas.... I will stick with Spirulina (smile). I have ZooMed Spirulina 20 on my list to buy from AAP -- but need to be down in Cobalt stock. I have a back-up canister of Cobalt Spirulina (with probiotics).
Cheers,

Well Parker, I thought of you yesterday....A local grocery store had frozen veggies 10 for $10.00 (along with a lot of other 10 for $10.00 products). The only frozen veggies they had left that we would eat were some frozen peas. I bought two packages for two of my 10 for $10.00....I will follow your instructions and will let you know if any of the rainbows go for the mushed peas. If they do, you get to say an "I told you so" (grin).
Cheers,
Judy D.
