The topic of dosing powdered meds for smaller tanks, even 1 gallon betta homes, was touched on by member cheri in her post in this section: What's eating at Bettafish?
I found this really interesting because I've faced that same task as I'm sure many of us have. I started this thread to ask a bit more about this while not hijacking the other thread which is to help cheri with her sick betta.
The approach mentioned for dosing small amounts was to dissolve the package of powder meant as a dose for 10 gallons in (for example) 10 tablespoons of water, from which you can accurately measure out 1 tbsp for a 1 gal. tank, and so on.
Carl's response on this:
with a couple new questions...
"This can work, but you have to note that these medications break down rapidly in water, therefore this premixed solution is not good much past 24 hours (maybe 48 hours with some medications).
I had thought it sounded like the perfect solution thinking of some medications which contain multiple drugs in different proportions for example FUNGUS CURE (victoria green and acriflavine). By dissolving the whole amount you would know the various drugs are present in the right proportion in the portion you're extracting for use.
I'm thinking you could take this approach with these types of meds, and if you are to give a second dose after 48 hours and the solution you've made won't be good for that long, then you would just repeat the procedure with a fresh package for your second dose. (using a greater amount of meds than you'd like for a teeny tank, but it would ensure you're using the right amount and of 'good' drug, which is more important)
Does this sound fair, Carl?
If so, would you know whether Fungus Cure would last 48 hours premixed?
My preferred method would be to use a gram scale to measure out dry amounts based on the weight of a 10 gallon powder package".
Would that be a special scale for weighing teeny amounts? I have a postal type scale which I weigh birds with in grams, but that much powder won't register at all..
Thanks so much! Such an important thing for all of us dealing with these meds and trying to help our sick fish, so your valuable assistance with this is very appreciated.
