Hello All,
I recently purchased a home with a Koi pond. It came with a ViaAqua EF-6000 pressure pond filter., but it wasn't connected to the pump and waterfall. I hooked it up and all was well for about 3 months. Then, I found two small jets of water coming out of the UV light window. I assumed the filter needed backwashing, so I tried that but the jets continued. I took the filter apart and cleaned each of the foam pads (none seemed excessively dirty), reassembled and when I turned the pump back on, the jets were still there.
Any thoughts as to what is causing the jets and how to get rid of them? I emailed the folks at ViaAqua, but they have not responded.
Thanks,
Graywuhllf

Well first... If I remember correctly, the UV windows are just a piece of plastic between two gaskets. Are the gaskets clean and not damaged? If that's not the case, maybe some silicone to prevent the leak. I would start with the gaskets first.

Thanks for your suggestion, DevonJohnsgard. I will check for gaskets. I didn't notice any when I was trying the things I mentioned. The jets seem to be coming from two small diameter holes in the window like they were supposed to let water squirt out if the filter needed backwashing.

After looking at the picture, I'm not sure if there would be gaskets. I was expecting a little different viewing window. It almost looks like it's designed to let water out, like you were saying. I'll talk to someone that has a little more experience with these and see if they know more.

Thanks for your continued help. I finally got a reply from the folks at the website shown in the manual and they said that they haven't sold this filter for over 3 years. (The manual leaves a little to be desired. It doesn't show the window at all and the trouble shooting guide doesn't say anything about water squirting from the top.)

Are there any instructions on the unit that give you a flow rating in GPH?
I've used several pressurized pond filters over the years and most of them will leak around various gaskets if you run too close to, or above, the listed GPH rating. Try using a smaller pump. It might just be back pressure that's causing it.

Likely the plastic in this window has degraded (from the UVC and simply time).
I have made successful repairs with similar products by using PVC cement along with plastic shavings (of the same type of plastic, often scraped from some part of the object that needs repair). I use the PVC cement to melt/weld the plastic shavings into the gap. You could do this a few times with an hour between repairs for a more thick "wled"
Allow a 1/2 day to dry

Hi Carl,
Thanks for helping. While the hole seems to be a perfect, intended slit, I was thinking the same as you. I'll try welding as you suggest and see if that stops the leak. If not, since the filter is an older model, it may be time for a new one. It seems that you have a lot of pond experience. Do you maintain a website or have a blog?
Parker: Thanks for your suggestion. The filter has worked with the installed pump for many years (with the previous owner of the home) and it worked for 3 months for me, so I don't think the GPH is the issue.
Thanks to everyone who has responded.
