I was just looking at the Segrest Web Site this weekend to check for their number since I have a question that I hope they can answer. [The cories I have had on order for so long are from Petco-one of their suppliers is Segrest Farms (never heard of the other one, and don't remember the name), and I was wondering if there is some special reason why it's been so hard to get them right now--the employees can't call them to ask themselves.]
Anyway, while I was looking at their "catalog" I saw a picture for the "Black Emperor Tetra" and I thought it was way cool! The body color was mostly a sooty black, and the males had beautiful blue eyes! Does anyone have any experience with this fish, or know anything about it? I don't know if Petco (or Petsmart--who doesn't special-order fish) will take another fish in trade, but I'm "considering" trading in one of my angels, since the one female has become uber-aggressive. If I do, I don't know if I'd trade in the aggressive female, and let the ousted one take her place back, or if I'd trade her in (she IS "a bit" beaten up, though, so I don't know that she'd be that acceptable in trade--besides, I feel sorry for her).
Besides the 3 angels in the 55G, I also have: 7 Black Phantoms, an albino bristlenose plecostomus, the cory that I'm trying to get school-mates for, and about 6 ghost shrimp. The numbers on the ghost shrimp are always in flux, because the occassional one will die, or get eaten, so I throw in a couple of replacements now and then. I always try to have them catch the largest ones they can when I buy more, but I don't worry too awful much if I get a couple small ones, because that's the only live food I have access to--except when I had my Oscar (and box turtle and salamander), who I bought/caught nightcrawlers, crickets, grasshoppers, etc., for. I used to have some rummynose tetras that I got before 2009, but my "supplier" closed when the mall wouldn't renew their lease--they did the same for a lot of the stores--and moved the library in instead.
If anyone has any thoughts, I'm "all ears." Angelminx

I do know tank size for these fish can become an issue and many people recommend large tank sizes for just one. Finding a good home for one might be option or making sure there is a lot of hiding places for all the fish. Plants work well, so as your plants get larger, this may be less of an issue. As for the Tetras, I haven't kept them, but do know they get a little bit larger, so they should be ok to not be eaten. But still could be bullied from the angel.

The silver angel was forced to "hide in the bushes" quite a bit once the other female became so aggressive. That's why I finally moved her to the quarantine tank. This has never been an issue with any of my angels before. I know it wasn't correct (but at the time I didn't really know any better), but when I lived in San Diego, I used to keep 4 or 5 angels in a 20 gallon tank, and never had any problem with them at all. (?)All the same sex; over-crowding? They never really even squabbled, and I had them together for at least 3 years before I had to move to Illinois, and find them a new home.
Luckily I knew about the size issue between angels and neons, so I have always gone for the larger tetras as tankmates for my angels. When I worked as a groomer, the pet store where I worked had a great selection of fish (as did the LFS where I got my first fish children), and it was always hard to decide what to get. Out here, even when there were LFSs "close by", the selection was poor, and for some reason, they didn't seem to have access to a wide variety of fish either. I had considered African Cichlids when I first moved back here, but other than yellow labs (which I love), they were only available as "assorted African Cichlids", no matter where I checked--even the stores I looked at in St. Louis. I wanted to be sure of the species I was getting, and even the people that ordered the fish couldn't tell you anything about their origin, because the wholesalers that supplied them didn't know either. That's why I went back to S. American cichlids--that, and I love angels!

She certainly is a personality! I have noticed her just "sitting" in the middle of the tank (towards the right side, which is where they prefer to lay their eggs), basically motionless--except that she would be flicking her dorsal and anal fins. I don't think she is "standing anyone down" because she doesn't seem to be looking at anyone in particular.

When I went to get my SAEs last Tuesday (see separate post), they had also gotten some (regular) emperor tetras in (all females though), but they aren't as pretty as the black emporers on Segrest's website. Besides, if I do get my SAEs, I don't think I should really get any more fish, other than to replace my female ram--all I've been able to find recently are males.
At the moment, I've got the male ram, 2 (2 year-old) angels, 12 black neons, 3 female and 4 male black phamtoms, 7 cories, and my albino bristlenose (plus some nerites, a couple chocoate rabbit snails, a bamboo shrimp, and a couple ghost shrimp--I THINK I also still have an Amano shrimp) in my 55G tank. I've heard recommendations for more fish than this for a 55G, but I think it's pretty full myself. I'll just have to be dilligent about maintenance.

You can always just wait for those prefect "fit" type of fish. I'm always looking, but always considering what will work for the tank.
