About a month ago I came out and started my morning routine of feeding etc and noticed a couple little albino BN Pleco fry clinging to the wood. I realized the male had been guarding them in a hollowed out branch of drift wood so was hopeful the fry would survive my angelfish but sadly they didn't. Well again I've noticed the male in the same hollow fanning eggs so this time I set up a 10G fry tank and removed the wood, eggs and the male to it. I figure the eggs are only about a day or 2 old so does anyone have any tips for keeping them alive so I can grow them and maybe sell them to the LFS? My plan for now is to keep the wood in until they fry get bigger then return it and the male to the main tank and let it all happen again next month. thanks

I have not personally bred plecostomus, (although I knewa few persons that did). I would make sure to keep good, but gentle filtration, a sponge filter is best for this. Monitor your ammonia/nitrite levels regularly Keep an eye out for egg fungus, although often by the time it is discovered it is too late to treat. Here is an article that although about breeding Bristlenose plecos, breeding should be pretty much the same: www.tankgeek.com/2011/06/02/breeding-bristlenose-plecos/Carl

I don't have any experience breeding anything other than shrimp (and that takes no skill), but I wish you luck! Keep us posted!

Good article. Thanks Carl. Turns out this time was a false alarm. I think the male was just fanning to attract the female and what looked like eggs in the hollow was just part of the wood. Oh well. Next time I'll be a bit more patient but in the mean time I have plenty of filter media getting ready to plop into the fry tank when it happens again. All part of the learning.

Just a quick update. First, thanks for the offer twotankamin. The first time was a false alarm it turned out to be the male just hanging out in his lair. about 2 weeks later, after I returned the male and driftwood to the main tank I saw him AND a female in the wood hole followed by actual eggs. Once again I set up my 10G and moved the driftwood into there and waited. About 8-10 days later the first babies started hatching and a few made their way out of the hole and onto the glass. Now, about a month later I have 20 1/2 to 3/4 inch young'uns in the tank just waiting for them to grow another inch or so then take most them to my LFS for credit. Some I'll keep and put into the new tank i'm setting up soon. I've been feeding them a combo of zucchini, cucumber, some baby brine shrimp and mostly no salt French cut green beans. MAN! They love those green beans. If mom and dad get back in the groove I'll have to make some more room. I have a large female veiltail BN in another tank by herself and am wondering if she will mate with my male and what would be the result. Might have to try that.
