HI CARL! PLEASE - DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER ADVICE TO HELP "CHANCE"? SATURDAY AS ABOVE - I GAVE A 30 MINUTE EPSOM SALT BATH & FED 1/4 OF A PEA. A WHILE LATER, HE WAS SWIMMIING CORRECTLY. I GAVE ANOTHER 30 MINUTE BATH BEFORE LIGHTS OUT. SUNDAY HE WAS FINE., BUT I DIDN'T FEED HIM THAT DAY. MONDAY - FINE STILL. I FED 1 PRE-SOAKED OMEGA ONE BETTA PELLET IN THE MORNING & 1 OMEGA ONE BETTA PELLET THAT NIGHT. TUESDAY IS THE NORMAL "FAST' DAY FOR ALL OF MY FISH SO NO FOOD. TUESDAY AFTERNOON, CHANCE WAS SIDE FLOATING AGAIN. LATER IN THE EVENING I FED 1/4 OF A SHELLED PEA. STILL FLOATING AT LIGHTS OUT. HE CAME OUT OF HIS HOUSE THIS MORNING BUT IS KEEPING HIMSELF BALANCED BETWEEN THE FILTER & GLASS. HE DOESN'T LOOK BLOATED & HIS COLOR LOOKS NORMAL, I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO FOR HIM. AS YOU KNOW, I RESCUED HIM FROM WAL MART OVER A YEAR AGO & HE HAS HAD A CONSTANT FIN ROT BATTLE. HE HASN'T GROWN MUCH SO I FIGURE HE WAS NEAR ADULTHOOD (AT LEAST) WHEN I BROUGHT HIM HOME.

The only thing I can think of is to stick to peas. He doesn't seem to have issues when you feed a pea, but the betta pellets sound like they cause some issues. Carl may have more advance, so we can await his response. Edit: I spoke with Carl and his suggestion would be to switch foods. Just giving a pea would not be a complete diet. The Omega brand you are giving him now is a good brand as per Carls Fish Nutrition article www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Quality_Fish_Food.html#recommended_foodsHe suggests the Sanyu, Hikari, or HBH brands. It may help. www.americanaquariumproducts.com/FishFood.html

The only thought I can add to Devon's post is genetics and previous care. This is something you can do little for, but it is often a MAJOR "player" in fish health (or any animals health) This seems to be especially common from my experience with Bettas, Goldfish, & Guppies. Over breeding or breeding for certain characteristics can easily allow for weak genetics that allow for a fish that has all sorts of issues from digestion, swim bladder, to disease resistance. The other major contributor is a fish that is exposed to very toxic conditions such as high ammonia early in life (this is very common with "Feeder goldfish"). The damage from very high ammonia levels in an aquarium to a fish' kidneys and sometimes be irreversible, setting the stage for a sick fish for life. WHAT IS THE ANSWER? Sadly little other than the best possible care you can give I do strongly suggest UV Sterilization, as its affect on Redox alone can aid a fish health immune response; however it is not a cure all either and is unfortunately not practical for most aquariums under 10 gallons See: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/AquariumUVSterilization.htmlwww.americanaquariumproducts.com/Redox_Potential.htmlCarl

I used to have issues with my live bearers constantly having GI issues. I've been feeding all of my fish Spirulina 20 for a while now and have not had any problems since.
