I thought I would update on some of my goldfish and also provide some interesting other things I have found out/seen. These are sort of random and not in any particular order.
First, my goldfish Salyme has reached 6 inches (including fins). I have not mesaured the fish but since the 40 gallon it is in is 1 foot wide, it is pretty easy to see. I rememeber when I got this fish, it was small and looked malnourished. It came from Meijers in a tank with fish that looked underfed or deformed. I thought Salyme woul turn out weak or die wehn I got it. I was VERY wrong! This fish has been growing like crazy since I got it including its earlier days in a 10 gallon with a few other goldfish which it exceeded in growth rate. Salyme is unrecognizable from when iI firt got it. I am proud but at the same time, know I need to start thinking about getting some of the smaller or weaker-seeming goldfish in the 40 gallon into a separate 10 gallon so Salyme and the other goldfish have additional growing space and the others are not dominated more than they are by the bigger fish that can nudge them aside duriing feeding.
Also, I noticed the goldfish (though some are still 3-4 inches) have been nibbling at my fingers quite hard- enough to surprise me. I wonder what will happen someday when I end up getting them a pond and they nip? ;D I think I may lose a few fingers. lol If I ever get a big fish with teeth, I need to make sure it isn't finger fed. Otherwise i think fingers may end up as part of their everyday feeding.
And also, I was surprised to realize that huge koi will eat ducklings if they are large enough! I saw a video on youtube of a several giant koi and a family of ducks swimming in the water. One of the koi grabbed and a duckling and appears to have eaten it.
And last, as of this summer, I will have had Puon, Oranda, Foneme, and Aztec 6 years! I am very happy about it and their longetivity considering where they came from.
