I'm so bad!!! Today as I was getting ready to clean out my 30 gallon, I was thinking that I should start researching new fish to get for it because there aren't many fish in it right now. So I starting counting the fish: "1 angel, 1 SAE, 1 Flying fox, 3 Celebes rainbows... wait, 3? Or is it 2... I've only seen 2, so it must be 2, but I can't remember when the 3rd died..." Sure enough, not 5 minutes later, I found the remains of a celebes rainbow. I have no idea how long ago it died. I cleaned out the tank last week and didn't see anything last week (obviously), but it was so decayed it was actually stuck to a plant leaf. Maybe that's how I missed it. I feel so bad though! Poor little thing died and I didn't even notice. This happened a few weeks ago in my little 5 gal QT tank too! I found a dead harlequin rasbora that had been dead for several days. I feel like such a slacker!

Sorry to hear about the deaths of your fish. Admittedly, this has happened to me as well- though normally I catch it the very day or the next. Once one of my guppies died unexpectedly. When I finally searched the tank and the area around and found no fish, I was confused. That is, until I found out the guppy's brother and another male had cannablized it! Only bones were left. The only other time I can think of is when a female guppy of mine died in a container when I bred guppies. She died at the far side and the 6 gallon container. It was not see through on all sides. I only found her a week (or a little less) after she died. She was covered in white fuzz and it was thoroughly gross and sad. I suppose having to use my mouth to start the siphon was my punishment for that one (although I had kept an eye on the tank.) My point is don't be too hard on yourself. This happens to almost every fish keeper who keeps fish for a long time I bet. It has happened to me and I l have always looked at my fish, counted them to make sure they were all there, and inspected them for any signs of illness daily. If it helps, checking on every fish daily could help. That was alerted me to fish that are sick or dying many times when I wouldn't have noticed it before. I hope that helps. Renee

Sorry to read this. I wish I had a dollar for everytime I missed a sick/weak fish in mine or often a clients aquarium only to find remains later So don't be too hard on yourself Carl

I'd rather find remains than nothing at all. Then I'm haunted for weeks with wondering what happened...

I also hate it when that happens, but sometimes you just can't help it. I just caught one of my silvertip tetras prolly a month and a bit ago now right on the verge of dieing but I hadn't noticed any symptoms of any sort in the days before. It's always sad cause it makes you wonder if you had paid closer attention you might have been able to save it....buttttt that's the reality of fish keeping, sometimes you just don't notice until its too late. No worries, don't feel like a bad fish mommy, it happens to all of us

Thanks guys! I did catch a rasbora a day before it died, so I was able to move it before it got messy and gross.
It's just weird about that rainbow. I just kind of lost track of how many I was supposed to have. Now all of a sudden that tank seems really empty. It's a 30 gallon with just 6 fish in it!

I had one of my 3 Phoso....something....catfish die and didn't notice for a while until a Client at the office pointed out that it was dead...in the same nana...which was against the glass on the far side of the tank...both fish died between the nana and the glass...needless to say, I moved the nana (anubius).
