I decided to finally take the plunge and overhauled my filtration system. I bought an AquaTop CF-300 canister filter and TMC Pond Advantage UV-25 sterilizer from American Aquarium Products.
The first step in my overhaul was to eliminate the "nursery" and remove the tank divider, which was becoming a magnet for algae.
The Indian Glass Fish are still too small to be safe so I decided to setup the old 2.5G betta tank. I transferred some rock over from my 55G and the intake sponge filter from the 14G tank. I also transferred over some of the smallest plants from the nursery and some cuttings from my oldest daughter's Cabomba, which was growing out of the tank. Now my youngest daughter has a tank of her own!
And here is what my 55G tank looks like now.
