I have a goldfish, Oranda, as many will recall, has fluid filled sacks growing over its eyes.
It went blind 2 1/2 years ago when this started and the sac have slowly been growing since.
Within the last several months, a 2nd sac has grown appeared over one of its eyes- growing right over the first.
This weekend, I noticed Oranda's dorsel fin was going down and put a towel over the tank. (This seems to help goldfish for reasons I am unsure of.)
However, it goes to the bottom a lot. (Similar to before the treatment with the medicated wonder shells)
It is hard to tell if the fish is on the bottom because it is sleeping (as some fish do) because I am sure it cannot see much light or its in pain or not doing well.
As well, it seems like it goes several seconds without a breath and then takes a few big ones.
Lately, it has also been breaking heavily sometimes and even went to the top this morning to grab some air twice in 10 minutes.
(This is not like my other goldfish Puon who does this as an instinctual way to try to correct its buonancy problems where swimbladder issues cause it to sink at times).
That said about Oranda's breathing, I tested the water a day or two ago and the water parameters seemed good. PH over 7, KH at 100 or so, GH almost at 200, nitrite 0, and nitrate around 10-15.
That said, when I woke up this morning at 10, Oranda was on the bottom, taking several seconds between large breaths, and swaying in the current a bit (though not off balance). I gently tapped on the glass and put my finger in like I was feeding Oranda and Puon. Immediately, Oranda became very active, hyperly looking for food, and even shoving Puon when he/she got in the way.
Anyway, I am unsure if this fish is on the beginning of its way out or not. I have had it 5 1/2 years so far.
Oranda 2 years ago when the problem was just starting.
Oranda as of a year or so ago.

I also have a two goldfish in another tank I got at the same time as Oranda 5 1/2 years ago. Of the two, I have noticed something odd with one. Foneme, who has had problems keeping on weight (but still growing and happy) has been having trouble with buoyancy lately (this is what I suspect at least). It gets stuck on the bottom of the tank some days and other days it is fine.
That said, I am concerned for both fish but I don't think there is much I can do. Oranda's problem is not fixable and Foneme just started with this a few weeks ago.
That said, these two will probably surprise me. When Puon first had buoyancy problems and bloating issues baths didn't fix, I thought it would only live a few more months. A year or more later, it is doing well and its body seems to keep the bloating in check.
That said, this is more informative than anything. I don't think there's much I can do for these guys but doing my success with these fish and others, they will be ok.
