I don’t have many snails. I have a plant that I let float, a foxtail I guess, it’s the snails favorite and when I first turn the light on in the morning there will be some on it. I hold a net under it, shake the plant, they fall in the net. Don’t see many during the day but if I find one I crush it. The wife saw that and told me not to do that because they don’t need a mate (pond and horn snails), they are born pregnant and crushing them releases the seeds. Did she make that up or is that for real? She didn’t notice I had flipped it’s guts stuck to my finger on the floor, I choose to let that go unobserved Thanks, Mike

I cannot say for certain she is right or wrong, I do know that many snails do not need mates, but crushing them causing the release of viable eggs seems doubtful to me. However since I do not know this for certain, I will see if I can find more definitive information.
Maybe someone else knows more definitively.

in my snail experience, crushing them doesnt cause a population explosion that should happen if squishing them releases eggs. if it did , logic would say that snails would be a way bigger thorn in many aquariests sides than they really are. if you are still concerned, quite squishing and get a loach...they`ll look after em`....good luck keeping these guys populations down....

I have both types of snails...your wife is half right ...sorta...LOL These type snails only have to mate ONCE!!! These types of snails carry both male and female parts so it really does take 2 to tango . I don't care for the pond snails but the ramshorn are a pretty color (the red/orange ones). Crushing them does not release viable eggs (IMO)...pondies lay a jelly pouch that contains eggs, Rams pouch develops a hard crust/shell over the eggs. Pondies will over run your tank. Removing the jelly pouch with your fingernail is the only way to help keep them under control or get a "fresh water" puffer (Figure 8 or a spotted). I keep a spotted puffer for my MTS (long cork screwy type) but they got smart...they stayed under ground...I moved him to my 75g at home and the dang snails started surfacing again ...
