I have 8 goldfish in a 40 gallon aquarium.
I am a bit concerned about lack of space/stunting because there are so many of them.
When I got them, they were no more than an inch and a half long. I bought them as feeders and I didn't expect them to last as long as they have. (Several I have had 5 years now.)
However, several of them are growing like weeds now. Some are some of the smaller fish that have gone through a growth splurt as of late and one is a 5 inch (including the tail) fish who has been growing at a very fast rate for the past 4 months. Even one of the fish, (Foneme) who is skinny due to advanced age/genetics is growing very fast now.
I am not worried about my water because I keep the tank spotless (I overclean) and I have never had nitrite or ammonia problems even when I was cycling the tank.
My concern is that the fish will suffer health-wise from stunting or lack of space.
It is out of the question for me to upgrade my tank at the moment because I am very pressed for time right now being a college student and the floor in my house could not support a bigger tank nor can I afford a bigger aquarium. I do plan to put them in a large pond when I leave home and I can afford my own place however.
Back to the topic, please let me know if being in a tank this size will hurt them. There is really nothing I can do about it at the moment. I'd just like to know.
Thanks.
Renee

Renee. a certain amount of stunting will happen but that doesnt have to mean they are unhealthy. what is unhealthy are too many larger fish in the tank. what i`d recommend, and i know ya don`t wanna hear it...but getting rid of a couple of the fish is the best answer....
