First of all, I am on the internet at the library now since my internet is down at home since we switched phone services.
But to make a long story short, I may not be on as much until Tuesday when I was told my mom's internet service would get it going (if there are no delays)
-----
To the main topic, my goldfish who I have almost had 5 years (Aztec) was caught in the clear tube on a Hydro Sponge # 1 filter this morning. I woke up and went over to my 40 gallon goldfish tank at around 9:30 in the morning and saw it there with the bubbles coming out, motionless.
I thought it was dead and prepared to get rid of the body when I saw the fish move.
I quickly got Aztec out and it went to the bottom of the tank, breathing heavily.
It looked like it had the beginnings of Saprolegnia or some white stuff on its eyes and a few areas that looked whitish in coloration around its face and gills, to white to be normal coloring. As well, where the goldfish was pressed up against the bubbler tubing, it had an area where its scales looked like they were missing and a large white area running the length of one side of its body. This is most likely a combo of the fish missing scales and Columnaris attacking the wound. One of its eyes also looked slightly reddish at the bottom like something had been pressing on it slightly.
I blanketed the tank to make it dark (this calms stressed fish in my experience) and decided to wait 2 hours and observe closely before taking action on what to treat the fish with. I also put some string I have used in the past to make spawning mops to close off the filter so the fish wouldn't get caught in it.
Aztec could not have been stuck in there much more than 12 hours because I recall seeing it at the last feeding.
I was shocked after just an hour or so to see the fish looking around (while still on the tank bottom) and making slight motions with its body as if trying to swim.
When I fed the fish soon after, it tried to get off the bottom to nibble up some food. After 2 hours, it was swimming, altough with clamped fins to due the trauma.
I weighed my options and decided to treat with a medium medicated wondershell. I KNOW this is a very light treatment but when I saw how fast the fish was recovering I decided to to it. I also didn't want to stress it out by netting it to give it a bath and if I treated it with Furan 2 and Kanaplex combo, I would have to change out the water every single day which is about 10 gallons for the whole tank. I also don't have a place set up I can seperate it out in. I have also had great success with wondershells treating cottony bacterial infections whether gram positive or negative. Also, with goldfish, though not all other fish, I have found leaving them be and letting their immune system do most of teh work is the best thing for some diseases if they are mild enough or if the fish appears to have a great capacity to heal.
Right now, it is swimming near the bottom with clamped fins. However, I fed my fish in late afternoon and it ate maybe 1/2 of what it normally does before the other goldfish gobbled it up. It is not very active or begging for food 24/7 like the other fish in the tank at the moment but it seems to be doing very well considering what it went through.
I will be increasing the salt level as well to help aid with healing.
It is hard to tell if the white areas on it are better considering this just happened today but the areas around its eyes and gills seem to be returning slightly to their original golden color.
I will treat Aztec with Furan 2 and Kanaplex if its condition worsens but I think it will probably be ok.
At this point, I do not think I need advice/help, just posting this for people to learn and also in case I need help with the fish later on.
But feel free to give tips or advice if you want to. I just want you to know that this is not an emergency that requires immediete input.
I know this sounds pretty bad but I think my fish will probably be ok.
